Battery tray
Ok, my cart has sat most of the winter. Last time we had it out the batteries didn't last too long, so I'm looking into new scottyb cables, T-105 batteries and PQ motor.
The guy I bought it from made it shine like a new penny when I went to look at it, but I knew better when I lifted the seat and he had replaced cable ends with lugs, posts were dissolved, etc etc, My question is with the battery tray. If I pull the batteries and that tray is worthless, can it be removed easily? Or does the body have to be removed? |

Re: Battery tray
it can be removed easily......its bolted in. granted, some of the bolts could be a bit rusty and give you problems, but mine didn't and my rack NEEDED to be replaced.

Re: Battery tray
like sir nuke said, can be done easily. Mine needed replacing too. I used a plasma cutter and a grinder to get it out. Used 1'' angle and flat bar to make a new one. If its rusted more than a little wire brushing will take care of, I would replace it.

Re: Battery tray
Ok, I'm going to bet that it's not nice condition just from what it looks like from underneath. So I'll prepare for the worst.
But if it's not in bad shape, I would want to protect it until the next battery change. What should I do/use to clean it to hold paint? I'm thinking the over flow from batteries would need to be cleaned... |

Re: Battery tray
Mine didn't look good enuf to eat off of, but was structurally sound - stiff, supportive, intact. I cleaned mine up with a wire brush and got some POR-15 after it. It seems to have worked so far, but it hasn't been long. They told me at the place I bought it from that POR-15 is impervious to battery acid. After I coated the battery rack in it, it seemed pretty strong. I was impressed with it, bit only time will tell. See it here:
http://www.por15.com/ Make sure you call them and discuss what you want to do with it, as there are many POR-15 products and you want to get the right one. Good luck! OMG! This is post number 666! |

Re: Battery tray
+1 on the POR 15. I did my whole frame, battery tray, splash pans, almost everything underneath, you wont regret it.

Re: Battery tray
Ok, well the tray is eat up in some placed that the edge is sharp and a knife. It's pretty much all rust, not paint. I had to knock the tie down off with a hammer and use vise grips to get the nuts off the batteries.
So now I'm trying to get the tray out. It's not looking that easy. I removed the two bolts on the back two uprights nearest the motor. Then the two bolts in the front. Now I see there are two hex bolts that are under the body. Looks like I would have to remove the body to get to those bolts. Is that true? I've already removed all the upright for roof and back seat to sent over to a friend for powder coat. Didn't want to removed the body...... |

Re: Battery tray
There is a hard to remove nut that holds the brake cable to the underside of the battery cage as well. I never removed the battery cage without removing the rear body, but I guess you could do it........
