dtree,
You may want to check to see if you already have a 400amp controller as some Marathon's came with a high amp contoller. Crawl under the cart and look at the bottom of the controller that is mounted in the middle of batteries. The controller will look like a fat stero amplifier. On the bottom of the controller will be a tag and should indicate the amp rating either 275 or 400. If you are lucky you will have a Curtis 1205 series 400 amp contoller. If so then I would check with EMP Motors and have your stock motor rebuilt for all torque. Andy's recommendation is ultimately the best as nothing come close to adding volts as long as the corresponding system components are compatiable.

It could be or it could have had the bed added by a previous owner as these are options.
As a reference all Marathons are metal bodies.

4 gauge minimum but have seen even better results with 2 gauge. You will not be sorry with the decision to go with the 48v this is truly a night and day difference from 36v.

dtree,
Replace all the battery cables, cables from F/R switch, and motor with 4 AWG gauge 600 volt welding cable (excluding the charger receptacle cables. Most of the small wires ie. on/off key switch, lights, pot box, etc are 12-14 gauge wire.
Reid.
