Won't Move in the Morning

We have an EZGO XT/X1-500 1992 electric cart. It will not move in the morning. After 11AM it will run all day. We keep it under a shed outside. We cleaned the posts and the connections on top and looked for loose connections. Occasionally, in the morning when pressing down the pedal it will try to surge/jump for less than a second. We have used the cart every day for 16 years and replaced batteries many times. Is there some component that is affected but the cooler night 60 degree temperatures in Central Texas or what else could be causing this?

unless your F&R switch is getting that damp man this s a good one..............i,m guessing either F&R switch or controller but to be honest this is the 1st time i have ever heard of something like this.......................

This is a long shot but......Could you do some testing for us? When you park it for the night, get a drop light and place the light next to the controller... it is possible that the cooler temps are producing condensation....as the day progress's the condensation dissipates. If it runs first thing in the morning you should replace the controller. Don't place the light too close, you don't wanna melt anything. You could also use a heat blanket....that may be a safer way to do it. All you want to do is keep it warm enough it cannnot produce condensation.

I have seen something similar with a controller that wasn't sealed off...the same year as yours. I still have the cart but the controller finally gave up the ghost. Like I said, I know it's a long shot but it won't hurt to try.

Your cart may have the same problems my dogs had. Laying outside they were hard to get roused up in the morning. Wife put em inside and they barely moved during the day. Finally wife put them in our bed, and dogs are dead weight. Just kidding. Darn dogs.

The cart would not move this morning after the light was on all night. After not moving with the light, I put a small heater and that did not do anything new. After pumping the accelerator pedal, pushing the cart backward and forward the cart moved forward. Pushing the cart did not seem to make it start moving as much as pushing the pedal slowly. It almost seems how the pedal is pushed determines if it will go after it has been setting over night. Now it will be running fine until the morning.
I never have replaced the motor brushes. How often are they replaced and could that be the problem?

Ok, well it didn't hurt anything to try. My first thought before I read your post all the way was motor brush. Under normal use they will last for many, many years but if you have never replaced them and your the original owner it wont hurt a thing to replace the brushes.
There is no way to inspect the brushes without taking the motor off/apart. If you have some basic mechanical ability you could replace them yourself, if not send it out to a motor shop. Last set of brushes I bought cost around $50. EMP could also rebuild the whole motor and you would gain some power along the way.

My second thought was throttle pot. You can check it with a volt/ohm meter. Place the leads on the 2 wires, measure the resistance. It should vary from 0-5k ohm...0 being 0% throttle, 5k being 100% throttle.

I would also agree with roady and checking the throttle pot. When they get old and have tarnish contacts, they can do some wierd things.

Now on a side note. are we sure that this is a controller cart, or a resistor cart.? I just want to be sure, because, correct me if im mistaken, but they did make resistor carts in 92. Up to 93 right?.

But for such a odd symptom, it seems more then likely for it to be a controller cart, and condensation from the ground could be affecting the pot.

I believe it is a solid state speed control. There is a box with terminals on top behind the solenoid and potentiometer. It was ordered Jan 1992 and delivered in May 1992. The MFG Code is H1792. I guess that is a 1992 model.
The cart started this morning with no problems. The temp was about 70 and a little bit less humidity. The driver first tried forward, and then reverse. This is the second morning using this method has worked. Normally we try reverse first since we have to back out. I will check the potentiometer.
