Default 48 volt charging question

Hello, I just bought 6 trojan 8 volt batteries. J13 so from reading they were put on the shelf Oct. 13. My problem is when I charge the batteries after on the charger and it has turned off the batteries are reading 8.3 volts and after looking at the chart that is only 75% charger. have used the cart 4 times put on charger right after using. Stored indoors. 2-3 days after charging the batteries will read 8.1 - 8.2 volts. Just a little drop. Not sure why I am not getting a full charge to 8.49 volts. Any help would be appreciated. Fluid levels are great. everything is clean and new looking. Good cables. Help. Thanks

What charger?

What is the highest pack reading you get near the end of the charge cycle?

Verify the voltage readings with a different DVM and try charging with different charger.

I am using a lester charger model 26070. Put on charger at 0930 it is not 1600 been charging for almost 7 hours. Total reading while charging on the whole pack is 61.35 volts and I am getting 10.31 on all the batteries but one. This one is reading 10.03v. Dont have access to another charger to use. Tried a different DVM am getting the same readings. Put new batteries in each just to make sure. The charger is not showing it is charging at 2 volts assuming it is going to auto shut off in the next hour or so. Thats about all I know. thanks for any info.

Keep an eye on the one low one - I would be tempted to trade that one in on another. Bring your meter when you go and take the one with the highest reading

Checked batteries 3 hours after off the charger. Each battery is reading 8.4v and total of the pack is 51.3. When I use the batteries they seem to drain fast. The only thing hooked to batteries is a 48 volt heater not turned on. I always keep it off and a 12 volt converter for lights. Have not been using the lights. I used the cart the other day and the batteries had drained down according to the idiot gauge almost halfway after 8 holes. Weird. I have charged the batteries 5 times now. Do new batteries that have been been sitting on a shelf for 5 months take a few charges to get back to new. New trojan batteries. Ugh getting frustrated. Wish I would have kept my gas cart. Oh well. Thanks for the help.

Are the batteries actually stamped J13? Where is this stamp? This would be a change for Trojan. Just curious.

To get an accurate SoC estimate, you have to let the batteries rest upwards of 12 hours, so voltage readings take 3 hours after the charger shuts off are going to give you a SoC estimate that is higher than it actually is.

The numbers don't add up. Six times 8.4V is 50.4V and the pack measures 51.3V, so there is an extra 0.9V coming from somewhere. That could be cumulative rounding errors, but that is still quite a disparity.

If possible, use a DVM that resolves the individual battery voltages down to 1/100 volt. IE: 8.4V could be anywhere from 8.35V to 8.44V and that is a difference of 12% in SoC. (82% to 94%). For the total pack voltage, 1/10 volt resolution is usually close enough. (Personally, when I do serious battery testing, I resolve the individual battery voltages to 1/1000 Volt and the pack voltage to 1/100 Volt.)

Let the batteries sit for at least 10 hours and measure the At-Rest voltages.
They will most likely be a bit low because they sit for so long, but they should all be within 0.1V of each other.

-----------
As for the J13 date code, Trojan (and some other battery manufacturers) post-date their batteries to offset the delay between being manufactured and installed. IIRC it is about 6 weeks. That might mean the batteries may have sit upwards of 8 months since the plates were formed and might need some extra attention to get them up to par.

Give the batteries a series of back to back charges to get them to reach higher SoC. Basically, wait an hour or more after the charger shuts off, unplug it from the cart and then plug it back in, initiating a new charge cycle on the "fully" charged batteries.

Drive the cart as you normally would to break in a new set of batteries, but give the batteries an additional back to back changes at least once a day for the next couple weeks. (No more than three back to back charges a day)

My T-105 batteries would only take a 85% charge when I got my cart (used) and I got them up to 95% in a couple weeks with back to back charges and they were up to ~100% when I replaced them with a 42V pack about two years later.

------------
The charger is a decent one, SCR type, and from what I can tell be looking at the schematic, it either uses dV/dT or dI/dT to terminate the charge rather than a fixed voltage. (The Owners manual is attached, if you didn't get a copy)

Also, check the last four characters of the model number. It should be W1**, meaning it is setup for wet cells rather than AGM or Gel Cell.
