connecting new batteries
I have a stock 2009 RXV with 4X Trojan T1260 batteries. They are original 2008 and I am planning on replacing them with 4X T1275 batteries.
Is there anything special I need to do while disconnecting and reconnecting the cables to keep from arcing or sparking? I do not need any more range or speed as the stock setup is plenty for my crazy teenage daughters and their friends. Just need to know how to safely disconnect and reconnect. |

Re: connecting new batteries
I am sure that Johnnie B (the battery god) will be here soon, but here is how I did it:
I connected the farthest from the computer first, and worked my way to the computer. So, then, there was only one single connection to make that was "live" so to say. (I hate it when they arc as well). I tried to make that connection as quickly as possible. If you make it in reverse, it seemed to me that many of the connections could arc, but now, come to think of it, only the last one would have an arc possibility. JMHO, and it seemed to work for me. Good luck! |

Re: connecting new batteries
I don't know much about RXV's, but I'm sure you should flip the Run.Tow switch to Tow before disconnecting or reconnecting any wires or cables.
I'm also pretty sure you'll get a spark when you connect the last battery cable. |

Re: connecting new batteries
Oh yeah, and the run/tow thing is important as well!

Re: connecting new batteries
I'd connect the pack positive AND negative, just in case there's leakage voltage on the frame.

Re: connecting new batteries
Want to avoid the spark? Get a 250 ohm resistor, temporarily put it in-circuit between the last cable & battery terminal to connect. This will "fill up" the capacitors in the controller & DC converter before last connection is made. Spark will be greatly reduced, or totally eliminated. It has the added benefit of alerting you to any huge errors or failed parts before last connection is made (and welding arc). The resistor will get too hot to hold over about 5 seconds (long enough for you to disconnect it without burning your finger)

-------- There are some filter capacitors with bleed resistors in the controller that are kept charged while battery pack is connected. They discharge while battery is disconnected, so you get an arc when last battery cable is connected. Manual says connect B- last. Touch edge of connector to top of stud to avoid screwing up the threads with the arc. |

Re: connecting new batteries
I think Sergio posted a while back about doing this with a light bulb. Maybe setting the bulb on the post and touching the cable to the threaded part? I can’t remember for sure how it went. Johnnieb, cgtech, would that make any sense?
