Hello gentlemen. I have a 91 Marathon. I recently purchased. I have cleaned all battery terminals and tightened every 7/16 i could find. Cart seems to charge well and run well, not too quick but good enough for now. Reupholstering seats at the moment. What are some typical maintenance things i can do...i want to keep this cart in good running condition. Thanks in advance for any good suggestions!!!

Silkworm, the standard thing you need/should do is to check the water level at least once a month (depending on how much you use your cart) and add water when needed, and if or when you di, ONLY use distilled water. the next thing is to keep the batteries charged at all times. even when you aren't going to be using it for a long time. you have a 36v cart....so a full charge is 38.3v. IF your cart doesn't have a digital volt meter installed on the dash yet, I recommend you get one, and I'm not talking about the little meters that come on some carts, we would recommend getting one from CartsUnlimited.net, here is a direct link to that page. http://www.cartsunlimited.net/Digita...ry_Meters.html

and when on CartsUnlimited site.... look at the left hand side of the home page....you REALLY should read ANYTHING and EVERYTHING that has the word BATTERY in the title.

on and btw.... Welcome to our happy little corner of the net, and to BGW. There is a BIG fridge on the back porch with anything you can think of in it...help yourself...of course only take what you can LEGALLY have. Make yourself at home on one of the big fluffy couches, kick your shoes off, put your feet up on one of the tables, yes we are allowed to do that, mom's, dad's, wives', husband's, girlfriend's and boyfriend's here don't care....and take it easy.



oh...btw....every once in a while a food fight breaks out...so you may not want to wear nice clothes here.

You might want to change the oil in the differential. Ought to be done about every 5 years or so and probably hasn't been. (You have to drop the pan to do it)

Also tread lightly on the battery studs. Max torque is only about 10 ft/lb.
The stud is actually a stainless steel hex bolt with the head embedded in the lead battery post. Too much torque will move the head in the lead, causing a hot spot that will melt the post.

There are also some Zerks that may need to be greased, at least on a TXT. I'm not familiar with Marathons.

Go to the Stickies and download the Owners, Service, and Parts manuals. Given that it's 23 years old, the brakes may need attention. Also, check for rust on the battery box, and anywhere else that may need attention.

Do these carts use standard 80/90 gear oil?

Good Call Sir Nuke, I just ordered one that has the meter for both your running batteries and aux battery. Thanks for the info!

I don't know what EZGO used in Marathons, but in later years they used SAE 30 motor oil, which seems a bit strange.

I'm currently using an 80/20 mix of SAE 40 and STP, but I'll be replacing that with Lucas 85W-140 Gear Oil in the next week or so. (SAE 85W gear oil is about the same viscosity as SAE 30 motor oil. )
