Default motor heat help

Does getting the bandit upgrade done help reduce heat any on the ezgo pds system. If not, is there a motor upgrade to help with the heat issue? One more question guys, does the alltraxdcx400pds contribute to motor heat? Thanks for the input fellows.

I assume you mean the motor is heating up, not the controller. Basically the more work (higher amps, steeper hills, speed, passengers) means more heat. A higher Hp motor is more capable of handling the extra work, while a lower Hp motor is easier to overheat.

thanks yurtle, I was kind of thinking the same thing. So therefore the bandit upgrade would help a little bit with any heat issues but, a different motor with higher hp would help even more? I had my wife, daughter, and myself onboard, on the highway for probably 15 miles and got almost home when it hesitated or surged real fast. I was about a 1/8 mile from home when it did it, I also heard a noise, kind of like a squeal but not real high pitched, coming from motor, and also it didn't seem quite as fast so I just eased home. Thanks again buddy.

I've only owned two series motors, the stock seemed to get hotter than the motor in my sig, at much slower speeds. I have an Alltrax ExRay, which monitors motor temp, and I used to have to rest my stock motor when it got too hot. My new motor seems to run cooler. Both were running at 500 amp setting, but I didn't have my ammeter connected with my old motor. It rarely goes anywhere near 500 amps.

did you have it going full throttle a whole 15 miles nonstop?
I would think anything would get hot used for that length of time

I'm sure JohnnyB or ScottyB will correct anything I've said which is wrong, but there are two names that always keep coming up, D&D and PQ, who I'm sure can also give you good advice.

Which is why I have a temp gauge.

no finance, mainly held it to about 15mph, a couple of times held it full throttle but each time only for about 1/4 mile.
yurtle, I've kept putting it off and putting it off but it looks like I need to go ahead and either send mine to PQ or just have PQ build me one. Maybe it won't take too long to get it back since their in SC to. I don't think I've seen the alltrax exray. Also yurtle, you said you had series motors. Do the series wound motors run cooler or warmer than the shunt wound motors?

Couldn't say. Wish I'd studied electrical engineering, but I have a EE neighbor that didn't know the difference between a series and sepex DC motor.

How hot was your motor? The insulation is good for 180° C, so it will boil water before it gets too hot. How old is your motor? Could be the bearing.

I'd be curious to know how hot is too hot.
