OK, i do want more speed
With my 48 volt conversion and new 48500 controller I got a lot more torque but not a lot more speed (in one of my other post you may have seen where I said something like "it goes as fast as I want to go in a golf cart" but everyone know that is bull, we all want to go faster). Speed went fro about 23 to 26MPH. Although torque is much better I thought I would get up above 30 MPH. I wondering if the RPM's on the motor are just maxed out??? It is an HT Electric motor that only says 6.1 hp on it. Can't find out much about this motor. Hope it is ok to run on 48 volts. Probably will talk to Robby at PQ about it but any thoughts/ideas are appreciated.

Re: OK, i do want more speed
I should add that I haven't looked at the programing so far so any suggestions on programming changes would be appreciated also. Thanks

Re: OK, i do want more speed
I have a high torque motor on 36 volts right now. I'm in the process right now changing over to 48 volts. when you did this you did not gain much speed? 30% of 23 equals 6 .9 miles an hour. theoretically it should go that much faster

Re: OK, i do want more speed
If "HT" means High Torque, the motor is wound to shift the torque curve towards the lower end of the RPM spectrum, so you are run out of torque at the upper end of the torque curve.
FWIW: Top speed on any electric cart is when the mechanical drag equals the torque the motor can produce at the voltage being applied to it. Your options for more speed are: Higher pack voltage: Numerically lower final drive ratio. (8:1 or 6:1 gears, or taller tires.) Different motor. Also, what height and type tires are you running, they might be holding you back. BTW: The HP of a motor doesn't mean much unless it is associated with the RPM the motor was spinning at, or torque the motor was developing when the HP was calculated. The formula is Torque -times- RPM -divided by- 5250, so a 6.1 HP motor could be fast or slow in a cart. |

No, HT is the manufacturer. I just can't find anything out about this motor. Seems strange to me to gain so much torque without significant gain in speed.

Re: OK, i do want more speed
Were you running the same motor prior to the 48V upgrade?

Re: OK, i do want more speed
Get a computer connected to the controller and verify 100% throttle using the datalog. You may have to adjust programming slightly. I know I did with the SPM controller.

Re: OK, i do want more speed
The same motor is currently available from nivel/HT (or an AMD equivilant). It is also known as "the raptor" it is a speed oriented motor, not torque. That motor should be safely capable of 7k rpm on 48v. I would start checking things like "is the controller seeing 100% throttle?", and "what is the volts being delivered to the motor at top cruising speed?" <- the answer to this is NOT "well, i have a 48v pack, so 48v". Since you were doing ~23 mph on 36v with the same motor, i would guess you dont have high speed gears.
