New battery cables?
So I'm gonna be making some new 2ga battery cable for my series cart. My question is will it be OK to use 2ga oxigen free audio power wire. And what solder should I use. I have the copper battery lugs already.

Re: New batter cables?
I'm not sure on the power cable question but as far as the solder goes, use electrical solder with rosin core flux.

Re: New battery cables?
most ppl use welding cable (self included), strained count (the more the merrier) and amp rating you need to look into .

Re: New battery cables?
Audio cable does not have an acid proof jacket like welding cable does. The battery bay is filled with acidic vapor each time you charge.

Re: New battery cables?
In my opinion The battery cable shown has too few strands and the audio cable too many... plus the acid resistant shield issue mentioned above.
There is a reason welding cable is suggested. Welding cable 4g = 425 strand. 2g = 645 strand This is wire specifically designed for delivering amperage. |

Re: New battery cables?
As mentioned, the insulation is less durable. In addition to acid resistance, welding cables are dragged around on concrete floors, so are pretty durable.

Re: New battery cables?
well i have 100ft of the cable for free, so if in a few years the insulation is starting to get bad ill make new cables for free again. I will keep an eye on it and check for hot spots in the cable after i drive it

Re: New battery cables?
Hard to beat free. I'd probably go for it as well. I used silver solder and 100% rosin flux from Radio Shack. Plan on doing a practice lug, then cut it open to be sure you have a solid solder connection. I cleaned with lug with emory cloth, fluxed both the cable and lug, and measured the exact length of solder to get a solid connection. Use a good quality heat shrink which has a heat activated "goo" to get an air tight connection. I measured the length of stripped insulation, to minimize contact of copper strands to air.
