Default Slack in Steering Wheel

Hey Guys
I have a lot of slack when steering. Feels like the steering wheel moves 4" either way before the tires respond. I was told steering box may need changing. $680 is the cheapest i have found. Are there any other suggestions or remedies??

If it is in the box you can replace the rack gear, they're made of weaker metal so they wear. it's like that so not to tear up other components. even if you replace the pinion gear too it's still way cheaper than a new box.
It may have play caused by bad bushing, tie rod ends, spindle tube bushings. You can find break-downs of the setup in the service/tech manual. get some one to turn the wheel while you investigate the possible other bad things

I did put a new 6" lift, put ezgo st spindles, it didn't come with bushings. Stuck homemade bushings in. Could this be the problem?

It's real hard to say without looking at it but if it may contribute to the problem. The control arm that goes from the steering box to the tie rods has a big bushing in it that wears out, it'll make them have alot of play if this happens. It could be wore out tie rod ends causing some of the problems. Like I said, it's real hard (if not impossible) to say without looking at it.
