Default what kind of speed to expect?

So I picked Uo a 97 series that has seen its better day. I'm in the process of rebuilding it with a Jakes long travel let with 14" rims and 23" tires. Spm 400 amp alltrax controller. 48v conversion. Scotty b's HD reversing contactor. Stock motor. What kind of speeds will I be looking at. If its gonna be low 20's I'm gonna go ahead and get a new motor as well.

not sure how similar the systems are but I have a 94 DS converted to 48 volts with alltrax 400 amp controller 14 inch rims tires are 19 inches tall (205/30 i think) and im seeing 24-27 flat ground. I'm pleased... But i think plum quick will get a call soon so I can add to uphill speed. I drop to around 18 on the big hills which isn't bad considering I still fly by all the other carts in the community. Good news to me.. no limiter on my golf cart. I've seen upwards 43 down hill and use the momentum to get back uphill most of the time.

You gotta stop that 43mph down hill stuff, you are gonna literally explode the motor. You could be pushing 10,000rpm.

A series cart on 48v with 23s is going to run out around 18-19 mph if all is well.

Sumner121
Not if but, when that motor explodes it will lock the rear axle at 40 mph. This is a seriously dangerous situation.

Technically a series wound motor can be as fast or faster then the shunt wound (sepex) motors used in PDS carts. The shape of Torque/RPM curve depends on the relative strengths of the magnetic fields generated by the armature and stator windings. The magnetic field strength ratio is a fixed value determined at the time of manufacture for series motors and they can be wound to have more torque at lower RPM (Torque motor) or more torque at higher RPM (Speed motor). The same is true of sepex motors, but the armature and stator (aka field) windings are SEParately EXcited (sepex), so the magnetic field strength ratio can be altered electrically by adjusting the amount of current flow through the respective windings, and it can be done in real time. (It is called field mapping)

A stock golf cart with a series motor has a top speed from about 12 to 14 MPH on stock height tires (18").
If the top speed in stock form is 13 MPH, installing 23" tires would mathematically increase the speed to 16.6 MPH.
If the battery pack was then increased from 36V to 48V, the motor's max RPM would theoretically increase by 33.3%, so the cart's top speed would increase to 22.2 MPH.

Of course, there are many other factors involved, so the cart most likely will not reach the theoretical speed.
