2000 TXT PDS - Resistor on Solenoid but No Diode
Hi,
In another thread, JohnnieB said, "PDS carts came from the factory with the resistor installed, but no diode. It should have both installed." http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/elect...eep-1-2-a.html Rather than bother him with a PM, I thought I'd ask here: Should I be installing a diode on my solenoid, in parallel with the resistor? Obviously, this doesn't show on the wiring diagram. If so, does any one know the P/N, off hand; or where to look for a P/N? Thanks, Chuck 2000 TXT PDS - completely stock. |

Re: 2000 TXT PDS - Resistor on Solenoid but No Diode
The diode goes between the small terminals (coil) on the solenoid.
The resistor goes between the large terminals (high current contacts). The resister reduces pitting on the solenoid contacts. The diode reduces pitting on the pedal microswitch, or whatever switch opens the solenoid's coil circuit. A PDS controller activates and deactivates the solenoid coil electronically, so there are no physical switch contacts to protect. However, there is an electronic switch inside the controller and if it goes bad, the whole controller has to be replaced. Installing the a diode on the coil terminals decreases the spike load on the electronic switch, so it is cheap insurance. On a 36V solenoid, a 1A diode will suffice, on a 48V solenoid, use a 3A. Nothing special, you can find them at Radio Shack. The banded end of the diode goes toward the small terminal that has positive voltage on it. In a PDS, that would be the yellow wire. |

Re: 2000 TXT PDS - Resistor on Solenoid but No Diode
Was replacing the solenoid in my TXT. Had everything together and in a moment of carelessness after I hooked batteries back up, I touched the solenoid (battery side) to metal. Big pop, smoke, etc. Hoped for the best, expected the worst. Nothing. The old solenoid I could jump and would click when depressing the pedal. Put that one back on...nothing. Could it be the diodes or resistor? Think I smoked the controller? Any help appreciated.

Check the peddle box micro switch or reed switch (charger receptacle)
Luckily your short did not occur on the controller side of the solenoid. |
