Using EZGO TXT 36V for hunting have questions

I am new to this board and have a few questions. I recently bought a 1996 EZGO TXT series cart and am in the process of getting it ready for hunting. I already have a Gator but want to set this up for a stealth approach for hunting. I was told by as local golf cart shop that I should not spend to much lifting or adding oversize tires to a series cart. I will need it to get through a bit of mud not to many hills but maybe some rough terrain and maybe snow in the late season. The cart I bought had no batteries or charger it does have lights windsheild and roof. I made a 3 inch lift kit (used to be a fabricator for living) and my son and I camo painted it. Now we are getting ready to buy batteries charger and tires just looking for suggestions. I am trying to build this as cheap as possible because I only plan to use it for hunting. I was thinking about buying 20" tires and using the stock rims I do not want to skimp on batteries and have been told not to skimp on the charger. I realize all of the questions probably have been asked before so I thank you in advance for any help offered.

If it's just for hunting then I would look into atv tires for the tread. Series cart is good for the torque needed to turn bigger tires. 23" tires are the norm for lifted carts. You say you want to go cheap but now would be the time to go 48 volt if you want to think long term. Before you buy batts and charger. This would add controller and solenoid to the cost but might be worth it if you're in hilly terrain.

Shane, as long as you don't go any bigger then the 20" tires you stated, you will be fine. and your advice is right on, don't skimp on the batteries or the charger. whichever batteries you get do yourself a favor and get the highest AH rated batteries you can afford. this why your run time will be longer.


oh and btw......CONGRATS on your ride and Welcome to our happy little corner of the net, and to BGW. There is a BIG fridge on the back porch with anything you can think of in it...help yourself...of course only take what you can LEGALLY have. Make yourself at home on one of the big fluffy couches, kick your shoes off, put your feet up on one of the tables, yes we are allowed to do that, mom's, dad's, wives', husband's, girlfriend's and boyfriend's here don't care....and take it easy.



oh...btw....every once in a while a food fight breaks out...so you may not want to wear nice clothes here.

THe stock control won't live long off road. Most people use 400 amps on flat ground and 500 amps on hilly ground (mud, snow included) 48v is the way to go for you right now. Slight cost increase on the batteries (get 190 amp hour rating) but, the controller,solenoid, charger all cost the same in 48v. You will have a very usable golf cart at 48v.

Here's the most recent pic of my TXT hunting cart. You can read all the spec's about it just by looking at my "signature" box below. Now, my tires are 22x11x10 and are the one's that "came" with it (this was a custom built cart) when I bot it 5 years ago. The tread depth was only 3/4" when the tires were new, and I haven't measured 'em lately....but I can tell you the rear one's are less than that now.

Before this hunting season I will be getting a set of Gators like these: and for my size wheel, the tread depth is 7/8". In SW Pa. this will be just fine to get around the snow and muddy hills. Now, when the snow gets above 4" I slap on a set of spike chains on both the back and front.

BTW, Jakes front disc brakes are a must "in these parts." You just can't stop a 1,000-lb cart on factory rear drum brakes when going down a hill.

Dave, those are fairly heavy tires! If you haven't yet, check out Mud Lites....do really good in mud/snow, ride good for an aggressive tire, & are very light. I've got a set on my Mule & am impressed with them.

Well......for the size that I need, which is 22x11x10, the GBG Gator weighs 18.2-lbs and has a tread depth of 7/8, while the ITP Mud Lite in that size weighs 17.1-lbs and has a tread depth of only 5/8. So, at least in the size that I need, the small increase in weight is worth the increase in tread depth.

Shane73, I just got my first cart also. I got mine mainly for hunting but also for just tooling around the neighborhood. Mine was a 90 36v CC. After talking to ScottyB I went with the 48v controller system. I couldn't be happier. I did the whole system including controller, solenoid, cables, batteries, 48v x 12v converter, tires, high torque motor. I did all the work myself, with Scotty's and the forums help. I went with STI Black Diamond ATR 22x8-10 tires and steel wheels. They were inexpensive compared to others. Look a lot like mud lites that I had on an atv before. I highly recommend ScottyB/ Carts Unlimited.
