Default electrolyte or distilled water

so yesterday we were all out having a good time. all the cards for running great until I got a hole in my tire and wheel had to head back right away. on the way back a buddy of mine flipped his cart. after the initial panic of figuring out if everyone was okay we got it back over and going again. there was a big puddle of electrolyte on the ground. should he
put distilled water back in the batteries or should he buy a jug of electrolyte to refill the batteries.

If you got the cart upright quickly and the caps did not come off the batteries I would just add water and then after a charge cycle or 2 check the specific gravity of all cells and determine if any batteries or cells need electrolyte.

Be sure to hose everything off good to get rid of the acid.

I was right behind him so I don't think it was on its side more than a minute and a half at most. and no caps came off either.
I'll tell him to get a specific gravity gravity meter and check it out
it's getting a nice baking soda bath this afternoon

I just reread my first post. I guess if I speak into the phone I should proofread a little better

Your buddy might need to check his insurance coverage too.

I'm just thinking "out loud" here, but I can see no way that simply adding distilled water would get the SG back to where it was before. He didn't leak distilled water out.....he leaked electrolyte, so he lost some acid & some water. I guess if it was a minimal amount, the difference in SG probably wouldn't matter much, but I personally would replace with electrolyte. Just my .02....

When I flipped mine, we righted it in probably less than a minute, and almost none spilled, so I don't remember even having to top mine off. They were Exides, and each manufacturer's lids are probably different.

it was on a dirt road so big puddle meant an area of gross nasty muck. one cell on one battery was just barely below the plate. he put distilled water in and is going to get a hydrometer to check it out in the next week . it was probably on its side for maybe a minute not much longer. the two people that were in it are definitely bruised up. but I'm sure we'll be out there again this weekend doing almost as stupid stuff
