92 marithon no torque
I have a 36 volt 92 marathon and have a problem that just started yesterday. I have had good battery life and enough power but when I got in the cart yesterday, I had very little torque. It will not even start off on a slight grade. Once it is rolling, everything seems ok but no torque on start off. My batteries are reading 39.4 with all batteries from 6.4-6.6 volts. The readings are 2 hours after coming off charge. Any ideas on what the problem could be?

Re: 92 marithon no torque
Bad cable, connection or contacts. Anything getting hot?
Starting from a standstill draws the most amps your cart ever draws, so any excessive resistance anywhere in the high current circuit will drop the most voltage when amps are highest. Could also be a battery failing under load. |

Re: 92 marithon no torque
Thanks, I will check all the connections. Voltage only drops slightly under load so It must be a connection, contact or wire. All wires are new 4 gage except from controller to motor. I will change them too.

Check if you can push your cart easily with one hand on a paved surface. I'm thinking with a cart that old you might have some friction problems. Starting with the brake shoes.

Re: 92 marithon no torque
Ok, I checked all the connections and they are tight, checked POT and it is good, checked each battery under load and none dropped below 6.1. Changed out F & R and nothing changed. Took it for a ride and the only thing that even got warm was the Top cable from the F & R to the controller. No friction problems either.
Any ideas to check next? |

No new ideas from the information you have provided. Do you have any additional information?

Re: 92 marithon no torque
Here's another thought. Based on the fact that none of the batteries dropped very much under load you may have a bad motor. (not pulling any or low current) Maybe bad or worn brushes.

Thanks, how can I test the motor?

Re: 92 marithon no torque
Given its age, I would consider tearing it apart, replacing the bearing, cleaning the commutator, and check the brushes and replace if needed. I did that on my 98.
Given your symptoms, The only thing I can imagine causing your problems in a series motor is excessive resistance in the brushes and commutator. Any break in the windings would result in an open circuit, which would mean the motor wouldn't work at all. Shorted windings would probably result in more voltage drop than you are seeing. |
