Default Question on motor

I know very little about golf carts. I have a 2002 Ez Go electric cart the kids were riding it & it quit moving & was making a noise like gear sound we took it apart & where the shaft from what I call the rear end goes into the motor is stripped. The teeth in the motor are stripped & the teeth going into it are stripped. Does this mean I need a whole new motor. This has never made any noises till today when it quit moving. Also what would cause this ? Thank You

What would cause this? Lack of routine maintenence, motor should be removed every couple years to grease the splines. A new input shaft will solve the axle side of the problem. The coupler on the motor can be replaced by an electric motor rebuilder, that will solve the motor side of the problem. See the site sponsor list to find a electric motor service facility.
