Default Loud bang then cart quit

My son was driving our 1999 EZGO electric cart. He had gone about 100 feet and heard a very loud bang then the cart stopped and will not run anymore. I assume that something failed in the motor but I have no idea how to troubleshoot. Any suggestions?

Check under the seat for an exploded battery. If that is the problem report back for suggestions. Odds are it is not the motor.

Usually when battery lets go it blows the caps off. Any missing? If you have a volt meter, check the pack voltage and let us know.

no battery caps are missing. each battery measures 6.5v. the series measures 39.1v.

No consistent unusual noises. I did hear a "pop" (lower volume than the initial loud bang) when I first attempted to drive it after the initial bang. it seems to attempt to drive (fwd and reverse) by making an almost-undetectable-jerk when trying to drive it. battery meter light shows full charge. reverse beeper works. i do smell battery acid when i try to drive it.

Good info, the whole "smells bad" thing gives me an idea, next check the pack voltage while you are pressing the gas pedal. I think the voltage may drop when under load, due to a shorted cell.

yep,39v without a load, 26v and smoke when pressing the accelerator. battery stickers say April 2004. If I have one bad battery then must I replace all 6 of them?
