Default ezgo j398

Hey guys new to the forum and just had a few questions about my cart. It is an ezgo j398 I believe it is a dcs but it has the tow/run switch on the controller. So my main question is can it take a performance chip? I have read that if it has that run/tow switch that it will be compatible with a chip but then I have also read that if it's a dcs it will not be. I know very little about carts and I'm just getting started so I want to find out as much as I can. I plan to try and make it into a hunting cart so I don't need a ton of speed just want a little more plus I will need bigger tires. It's electric 36v. Thanks for any help y'all can give me

j398 should be a 1998. With tow run switch should be DCS system, and no performance chip for DCS. You can upgrade the controller, wires and solenoid and get some more speed and torque. Size of tires you are going go with is key factor in deciding how big of controller to upgrade to.

Thanks for the help, I'm not really sure yet just trying to figure out pricing of everything. If I added 2 batteries to make it 48v would I still have to change the controller and solenoid for it to make any improvement at all?

Yes the stock controller is marginally adequate for golf in these carts. But once upgraded to DCS400, HD solenoid, and 4g cables they become quite able carts with 22" max tires on it. Try it on 36v before you go 48. 42v is a reasonable mid range upgrade too

You can't put 48 volts to the stock controller
