Add one battery for 36 to 12v?
I have room under the seat for one more battery. I currently have six 6v batteries. Can I add upgrade the solenoid and add one 12v to get to 48v? Cables have all been upgraded to 4ga.

No you can NOT add one 12 volt battery to your 6/6 pack for 48 volts...
You either do it the right way by going 6/8 or not at all.... |

Re: Add one battery for 36 to 12v?
Is not advisable to mix 6 and 12 V batteries in the same system for two reasons.
These batteries have different amperage capacity and will not discharge at the same rate. These batteries have different charge requirements and will not charge the same rate. As far as what you need to change to run 40 V, you need to change both the controller and the solenoid at a minimum. Hope this helps |

Re: Add one battery for 36 to 12v?
Mathematically - Yes
Operationally - No 36V + 12V = 48V, but the battery pack will be so imbalanced, it'll barely run the cart and if you recharge with a 48V charger, it will soon destroy the batteries. The AH rating of all the batteries in the pack needs to be the same and at best, the AH rating of a 12V battery is only about 1/2 of a 6V battery. However, adding a seventh 6V battery for 42V works out pretty well. |

JohnnieB. If I add another 6v do I just add it to the series and cable it up as if there were only six?

Re: Add one battery for 36 to 12v?
You could probably pull off a 42v upgrade right now. You would just add another battery in series like they are all wired now for 36v. US Battery states that they are ok with either adding more batteries to the pack or replacing batteries if the pack has been through 50 or less cycles. If you are inside that window with your new batteries, I would suggest 42v now.
The controller will be good for 36, 42 or 48 so when this pack wears out, you could jump to 48 for just the cost of a new charger and the additional battery. At that point you could likely recoup some money from your 42v charger, but keep in mind that 42v isn't all that popular so it may be a small market. If I were in your shoes I would seriously consider going 42v. I want to move to 48v but my batteries are 2 years old and it just doesn't make sense to purchase a new battery pack just to up the voltage. Maybe if I could get some decent money out of my current batteries I would do it, but the reality is I'm probably waiting a few years for 48v! |

Re: Add one battery for 36 to 12v?
Just adding a seventh battery doesn't work. You have to upgrade the controller, the solenoid and battery charger also.
Aftermarket controller such as those made by Alltrax will work at 36V, 42V and 48V. The Super-Duty solenoid that Scotty sell, also works at those voltages. So with an Alltrax controller and Super-Duty solenoid, you can run at 36V with your current battery pack, add a 6V for 42V in the near future and then go to 48 volts when you replace the pack. A 42V DPI Accusense charger uses the same transformer as their 48V charger, so upping it to 48V is simply replacing the 42V control board with a 48V control board. That is about a $120 expense to change it to 48V. I have a PDS cart, but didn't know what pack voltage I would end up with, so I installed a DCX400 and Super-Duty solenoid. I ran that system at both 36V and 42V. With my current setup, 42V maxes out the motor RPM, and I have all the torque I can use, so I probably won't go to 48V. |
