Digital Multi Meter

Hi,

I just bought a 2003 PDS that is not running so I've got some work ahead of me. I have an old Radioshack analogue multimeter but probably need to upgrade for all the testing I'll probably be doing on the cart.

I've seen a range of under $10 to several hundred bucks for meters. What should I look for? Any recommendations?

Like most things in life, with DVMs you get what you pay for to a certain point. You don't need a Fluke, but you don't necessarily want to rely on a $10 China Freight meter either. I went to the low side of middle of the road and bought a decent Craftsman meter. You should be able to find something full function, accurate and reliable for under $50.

The best money spent is for one that auto ranges on the ohm side. No need to fiddle with the right scale taking 4 readings just to get it right. I have a Fluke 88 I bought in 95. One of the best functions is its MIN/MAX feature. I can take blind readings, as in not look at the screen, then recall them and see what I had. Snap-On's BluePoint line has a couple decent meters that are better than a DIY, but not as pricey as a Fluke.

Your RadioShack meter may get you by. It won't be accurate enough to tell state of charge of your batteries but other than that, it may be all you need to troubleshoot things.

Fluke 88 will serve you well, I would check local pawn shops.

I use a basic $20 craftsman special which serves most of my purposes for measuring voltage & continuity testing. Nothing fancy, of course my cart is an old school 1977 ezgo and doesnt deal with controllers or potentiometer readings.

I've been super happy with my Klein MM200. It does everything I will ever need and was less than $50 at Home Depot.

Whichever route you decide to go, make sure at it least has auto range. Just simpler.
