1988 Marathon on Lithium
Been lurking here for a few months and curiosity led me to craigslist where I scored (according to the serial number) a 1988 EZGO Marathon delivered to my door for $100. I've got boys ages 10/7/5 and we're going to rock this thing together.
Software developer by day, hardware hacker by night I really have never done anything like this but I figured with an awesome forum like BGW, and a superhero dad reputation to uphold there is absolutely no way I can screw this up too bad :) The thing rolls, and holds air in the tires. Beyond that I'm pretty unsure of anything else. I dont yet know if the motor works, there was no batteries, no charger, etc. Be forewarned, we're not building a showpiece here. Baby steps. I'm mainly looking for something the kids can cruise around the neighborhood on with their buddies. I may let the kids doctor it up themselves with stickers of their favorite teams and such. Tonight we gave the kids wire brushes and some tools and we started breaking the thing down a bit to clean her up. We're committed now. Waiting on lithium goods and a charger to get here. I've seen a couple guys on the forum who have blazed this trail, or are in the process and I'm itching to try. I'm hoping ScottyB can help me get rid of the resistor gear and full update the guts of this thing. I'm going to hit a few brick walls, I am sure, but I hope that this log will give me a good place to work through and around them and someday enjoy motoring down the road with my boys. |

Re: 1988 Marathon on Lithium
Congrats on finding a cheap cart. It won't be cheap long if you get a controller upgrade and lithium battery pack. What batteries are you going with? Charger?
I too have started another lithium cart, a Yamaha this time. I just bought (ordered) an entire pack from a Nissan Leaf. It's much more batteries then I'll need but the price was great. |

Re: 1988 Marathon on Lithium
@sportcoupe, same batteries, I am trying to buy a 6 pack from these guys http://hybridautocenter.com/HAC4/ind...0ah&Itemid=605
They've been out for the holiday so I've been unable to get a quote from them, if you have a better supplier please let me know quick. As for the charger, I was planning on talking to Ray at quickcharge for the 15 amp charger as others have done. In all I am trying to not venture to far from what I have seen from you and others as a combination that works. Thanks in advance for all your insight and help! |

Re: 1988 Marathon on Lithium
My cart is a 88 marathon with lithuim batteries from a Nissan leaf electric car. So far it has been no problem yet. And it flies. I would go to all 48 volt stuff since you are going to replace all the electronics. I m sure Scotty has a upgrade conversion kit just waiting on you...lol. Just be super careful messing with the lithuim batteries. Make sure you cover all the connections that so you don't accidentally short anything.. And good luck...

Re: 1988 Marathon on Lithium
I left in the stock motor for now. I did put in 7 modules. I have a alltrax axe4865 controller in it so it will take the extra juice. I have a alltrax spm48500ez controller on order for it now. Make sure you use a HD solenoid and I put 2ga wires on it also. I don't go on long runs so the motor is doing ok. I plan on upgrading the motor next when the funds will allow it..

Re: 1988 Marathon on Lithium
Alltrax can accept up to 60v input.
Fully charged: 7 Leaf batteries = 58.8v 6 Leaf batteries = 50.4v 5 Leaf batteries = 42.0v As you can see if you are adding an Alltrax and if you can afford it the 7 batteries is the best performance option. Connect the batteries in series for these voltages. If you need more range, simply double the number of batteries above based on the above voltages of what you intend on running. You will end up with a series/parallel arrangement. |

Re: 1988 Marathon on Lithium
While we wait for the conversion kit from ScottyB (maybe next week?) we've taken a wire brush and wheel to the entire underside and battery tray.
Once rust removal is complete we've got some POR15 that we will be using to cover the areas that were previously rusted (mainly just the battery tray area. More pics to follow. |

Re: 1988 Marathon on Lithium
Was curious if someone could verify that this looks OK? I wasnt sure if there was a cap that was missing?
