Dealing with rust
I have a new project (first project) that I am detailing in this thread. http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/elect...ml#post1071249
Question is, how do you guys deal with the rust? I dont have much rust in the front, but the back battery trays are fairly rusty, nothing has rusted through yet so I think it may be salvageable. I currently have a brush on my drill with gets it not too bad, and brushes too. The big open areas are easy to get pretty clean, the joints are more difficult. How clean does it need to be before I cover and does anyone have any suggestions of what to cover it with? Note that this cart isnt going to be a showpiece, just a kick around cart for the kids, but if there are some easy and inexpensive ways to do some prevenative maintenance while I have everything torn apart that would be great. |

Re: Dealing with rust
POR can go right over rust and form a great barrier. Just google POR.

Re: Dealing with rust
POR is a great product as it neutralizes the rust. Definitely make sure that you use a rust neutralizing product like naval jelly or phosphoric acid prior to painting. Simply painting over the rust is a waste of time. If you don't kill the rust, it will come back.
Most Home Depot and Lowes carry a product called Jasco Metal Prep. It is fairly inexpensive and is easy to use. You should be able to paint over it with just about anything you choose. |

Re: Dealing with rust
There are several products on the market today, that all do a fine job of covering up rust, if applied correctly, and most say they seal it, and prevent it. As sowilliams said, por 15 is a very good product, the only thing i don't like is if your project is in the direct sun light it gets a white milky film on it., To stop this from happening they have a seal product you apply over the paint. Most cart frames are not in the direct sun light anyway. Other products, like Rust seal, and Chassis saver, all do a fine job as well. To me, It depends on what your willing to pay, and put into your project. Rust will return with all these products, if not applied correctly, per there directions. Checking for chips in the finished surface will also help the rust from returning, because exposed metal as we all know will rust. Good Luck with your project.
