Tips/Tricks on removing stuck front lug nuts
Hello, 2004 TXT/PDS, with stock rims and tires. Does anyone have any tips on removing front wheel lug nuts that must have been tightened with the strongest impact wrench in the world?
Of course I have the proper lug wrench and was able to get one wheel off with lots of liquid wrench and a breaker/extension bar but I had to really jerk the entire wheel (hence the whole cart) before finally getting got off. If there were front brakes or I could lock the front wheel somehow it would be easier. I'm afraid I may have jacked the wheel bearings as now the one wheel I did get off wobbles a bit after the new tire was installed. . Thanks |

Slide a piece of pipe over your breaker bar. The longer the better.

Invest on an air powered impact wrench, you'll find more uses for it as the years go on.

Worse case, take the hub off and drill out the studs from the back. You could also take the wheel hub off and take it to a shop that has a big impact gun. It will either come loose or break the hub..

Re: Tips/Tricks on removing stuck front lug nuts
Thanks
I did the pipe over breaker bar trick and got one wheel off one side that way. Problem is I have to really jerk it quick or the wheel itself turns with the force and I hope that jerk didn't damage anything. I had my girlfriend and myself standing in the cart to try and prevent the wheel from turning. Hopefully an air wrench will get around the wheel turning. Or if I had some way to lock the front wheel... |

Re: Tips/Tricks on removing stuck front lug nuts
Prime example of why not to use an impact to put on lugnuts. Not saying you did, but somebody did. Is there holes in the rim that you can slide something through to keep it from turning when you apply force to it?

I second the impact wrench suggestion, even if you have to rent/borrow one. RAY

Yeah stock rims so no holes in the rim to try and prevent it from turning. Guess an impact wrench is in my future. The P.O. must have used an impact gun to tighten. I will be using a torque wrench myself... Thanks

Re: Tips/Tricks on removing stuck front lug nuts
If you angle the breaker bar so that the twisting force pushes the tire toward the ground, the amount of force you can apply before the tire spins will be greatly increased. Works even better if you position the lug on the opposite side of the rim than i did in my sloppy drawing (in this case, the lug farthest to the right).

Re: Tips/Tricks on removing stuck front lug nuts
An electric impact delivers more torque than an air impact. I used a Snap-on 1/2" 18v impact for the big stuff and Ryobi 3/8" 18v for the small stuff - My bet is the 1/2 " Electric ( they do make AC units) wioll zip those nuts off. Worse case scenario is the stud spins in the hub this happened to me once. I ended up removing the flange and driving it through... no fun.
