Default Finally got it programmed!

Well I finally was able to program my DCX400PDS controller. For some reason I could never get my laptop to work with my buddy's usb to serial cable, it kept showing "cannot locate controller". So my wife said, let me try it on the computer in the house(actually the one in the bedroom) and it showed "ready to use". So I figured I could bring it outside under the garage quicker than I could unhook the controller and find two 9v batteries. Did that and presto, located controller and programmed it. Took all of about 15 min., from unplugging computer in house to finish. Wish I would have done it like that a few days ago. I had two field maps to try so I put one in and test drove it and came back and tried the other one(probably gonna go back to the first one). I'm still gonna find out why my laptop wouldn't work because I bought the laptop especially for that reason about 3 weeks ago. They probably won't take it back now, wish I'd tried it like this before I bought it. because I really don't need a laptop, I usually mess with the desktop. All's good for now, that's all that counts.

Sounds like the problem might be between the cable and the driver in your laptop? Just a guess really....

I tend to think the same thing Scotty, I might get a new cable since this one is my buddy's and I don't really know how long he's had it. Scotty, do you think it might not be compatible with my laptop? You think a new one would work? His is one from Radio Shack.

No I didn't have it on that. Did yours by chance come with a disc? My laptop is the 8.1, that may be a problem there.

I had this issue a few years ago but with Vista. The drivers that came with the cable would not work. I searched for days to find the "right" one. Finally it occurred to me that the cable was basically just a chipset so did a search for a driver for the chipset and found one. Downloaded that, installed it and good to go.. Once it had the correct driver the cable actually showed up under device manager as a Com port

Edit.. Mine used Prolific drivers but just saw this comment on Rad Shacks site

Works fine with windows 7 and 8. I have also used it on XP and Vista. Install the driver before plugging in the device! The latest driver that is available for download is for Vista. If you are installing it on 7 or 8 use the following instructions. Once you have unzipped the file, navigate to the Vista folder and open it. Right click on the SETUP.exe and select properties. Then select the compatibility tab, then select the "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" check box. Once this has been done the previously greyed out dropdown menu will allow you to select "Windows Vista". Then Click Ok and you should be ready to install the driver. If you want you can once again right click on SETUP.exe and select "Run as Administrator". You may need to restart your computer. After all of this you should be good to go. Make sure it is recognized under "Devices" as "Radio Shack usb to serial". Best of luck.

kgsc, I read that same review. But I wonder with mine being a 8.1 instead of a 8 , if that's the difference. My desktop is an 8, and it worked with it.

Why would you need to test multiple field maps? Do you have a non-standard motor-controller combo?

Could be the chipset itself doesn't support 8.1 but if 8 worked I would think 8.1 would but this is Microsoft..

Try going to your laptop and choosing the "compatibility "setting for the program you are trying to run. It may solve your problem. win 8 and 8.1 are compatable - if you can run with Win 8 it will run under 8.1.
