Unusual battery question
I have a couple of good 6 volt GC batteres and am thinking of hooking them up in the back of my van to run a 12 volt winch. Any ideas on how they would hold up to being charged by the alternator and the drain of the winch? Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks, David |

Re: Unusual battery question
There are some variables you need to fill in. We need to know how much draw the winch is & how offen you will use it......how much the altenator puts out and how often...You should like the large amp capacity of the GC batteries.....

Re: Unusual battery question
Well I can't find an amp draw on the winch, but it is a 3000 lb, 1.1 hp, 12 volt permanent magnet. The alternator is a standard GM 65 amp. The van is driven almost daily and the winch would probably used weekly. I will also double line anything that is very heavy.
Thanks for the input, David |

Re: Unusual battery question
We charge GC batteries with a maximum of 25 amps. So you want to be careful you are not charging too fast or too hot. That would shorten their life. Your car battery and GC battery are 2 different critters. With 2 different charging needs.
You may be better off just putting the GC batts on a small 12v slow charge once a week or when-ever they are low. Use a voltmeter to monitor them. I use 2 for a winch this way and they stay up for weeks if not used much. I can plug them into a 12v trickle (maintainer) charge. |
