Default 83 Ez go

Hey everyone brand new to the forums....I bought a 83 Ez Go a few days back and have now realized I haven't a clue about golf carts. I apologize in advance if I sound clueless.

I purchased a 3 wheeler model and it appears the previous owner added 3 - 12 volt batteries instead of the traditional 6 - 6 volt setup. I took it for a spin and the cart struggled of slight hills and the motor made very strange noises. I am wondering if I need to go back to the 6 - 6 volt setup?

Do you think the batteries setup is causing stress to the motor or is the motor just junk as well?

Best to post this in the EZGO section:http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/electric-ezgo/

In a nutshell, you have automotive starting batteries instead of golf cart batteries. Differences are significant. However, those batteries are sufficient to prove the cart works.

This is an old cart with an antique and inefficient drive system, but it is simple, rugged and cheaply repaired. Don't expect too much out of it compared to modern carts. If you're interested in restoring these old carts then it could be interesting for you but they are not collectible as far as I know.

Thanks for the prompt response. All valid points - If one was to restore it would you replace everything or specific items to make it more modern. Haven't had a chance to specifically look on this site for restore jobs.

Really depends on what you want the cart to do in the end. You could R&R the speed board, contacts, resister and such and have a reliable cart for limited uses such as running to the mailbox or general yard work on your property.

To venture out to cruise, campground use, or golf etc it would probably be best to convert to solid state and get real golf cart batteries. There are solid state kits that you can probably install yourself with basic skills and common tools. This will be in the neighborhood of $800 +batteries and any other mechanical repair needed. (brakes, steering, tires, body work or whatever)

They haven't made 3 wheel carts for a long time so I'm unsure of parts availability for the front assembly. Body parts, especially the plastic may be hard to find. If the motor is parallel to the axle replacements are available but if it is perpendicular to the axle I think options might be extremely limited. However, I'm not a restoration expert or even in the golf cart business.

People are interested in these old carts and you can get better info in those sections of this forum.
