Taylor Dunn on Steep Hill/Incline
I am a newbie so forgive me as I am likely not posting this in the correct spot, but I thought the issue I have would best be addressed by those with technical experience with these carts.
I am considering purchasing an older 36V Taylor Dunn vehicle such as a B248 or investing in new batteries for a 2372R (looks like a utility version of a Tee Bird but apparently was designed to push small aircraft around a tarmac), but am concerned as I want to use it to go up and down a very steep road. The troublesome section of the road is about 500’ long and descends about 110' in this distance with the lower portion being even steeper than this overall 22% incline. Are these Taylor Dunn vehicles capable going up and safely down such a grade? I have never used the 2372R I have and it needs new batteries and brakes (for brakes it uses a band that goes around one cylinder connected to the direct drive system.) I believe the B248 available has brakes only on the rear two wheels. I would also like to use them to push around some heavy trailers on a flat drive area covered with loose stone and grass. A gas Ranger or Mule would likely be more suited to the incline, but the expense of them and my concerns about using them to push around a trailer are what led me to consider the Taylor Dunn vehicles. Before I buy new batteries and brakes for the 2372R or get a B248, I would really appreciate your thoughts on using the Taylor Dunn vehicles for my rather steep hill application. Thank you, Lloyd. |

I checked the grade using my iPhone and most of it is around 12% with maximum for a short distance at 20%. (this is angle not grade)

It could do it, but it would loose speed for sure. Upgrading to a torque motor would help if you really wanted to go in this direction.

Re: Taylor Dunn on Steep Hill/Incline
Thank you for the insight. I checked out a B248 and it slowly made it up a 13 degree incline, but the ride down was a more than a bit concerning. I had the brakes all the way to the floor and then engaged the parking brake and it was still moving at a significant speed toward the bottom of the hill. We had a large run off area so we were not too concerned. This particular B248 had the brake system which uses a band that goes around one hub/cylinder connected to the direct drive system. The brakes had plenty of pad and the hub/cylinder looked good. Perhaps they were out of adjustment, but if felt like too heavy a cart for too big of a hill. It would be nice if you could replace the one hub for one large disc brake.
