Default New or old?

I have never owned a golf cart before and am looking to pull the trigger and buy one very soon. I live in the country close to the Ohio river in Kentucky and am looking to get a cart to drive around in with my younger kids (4 and 5). I have atvs so i'm leaning highly in favor of an electric cart since I have gas users already. I will most likely take it out to get to the deer stand ect, but no mudding or anything rough or too long distance. I'm also leaning toward EZGO since they are readily available here and everyone seems to be selling them new or used.

My biggest question is.....should I buy a newer cart or would it be better to buy a cheap older cart sub $1000 range and gut it to put in a few grand in parts and mods to make it faster and lifted? Looks dont matter so much as function and performance. I seen a guy on here had a site and he was selling kits for around 1200-2000 excluding batteries that basically would give you a new cart anyways for a lot cheaper than a brand new cart.

suggestions?

With a few electronic upgrades you can have a great off/on road cart.

Is there anything I should look for in particular when buying a cart besides new/newer batteries?

find one with old/bad batteries for a lot less money or a rolling shell and build it up yourself with new batteries etc. This way you will not have to worry about how the batteries were maintained previously. Then Scotty can advise you about the upgrades required for your needs.
There are many build threads on here to show you what can be done with a $100 cart and a few grand to spare. way less than buying a later cart and you have a blank canvas to work with.

I ran a cart building business for years in the UK, buying ex golf fleet carts for bottom dollar and building them to customer specifications.
