Question Re: Programming Curtis Controller

Hi Guys,

i'm reading in this forum for a long time and I got almost everything working with the hints mentioned here.

But today I run into troubles which I stuck right now.

I tried to configure my controller (1243-4277) I bought on eBay a few days ago, but I will not receive any parameters. I just got one parameter as the following picture will show. Sorry, I can't post pictures right now

I got the following Parameter:
Program:
-MODULE ID : 5
-RX COB : 1
-TX COB : 1


Of course I can monitor some parameters and I can observe the changes...but I can not configure anything

I tried to configure with 1314-PCPS_OEM_4-6-10-470_setup.exe and 1314-PCPS_OEM_4-6-7-467_setup.exe

Any hints on this matter are welcome.

I think you mean 1234-4277, aka a controller that is VCL dedicated to pallet jack/forklift duty. Good luck with one of those, eBay is loaded with them. You would have to wipe it, aquire an OS file, compile a usable VCL into it with WinVCL from Curtis, and rewrite the controller with it. Good luck finding Win-VCL.

Hi Bob,

thanks for your fast reply. I'm definitely speaking on 1243-4277(picture attached).

Nevertheless, this sounds not that trivial to wipe the controller and install a new OS. I'm hoping that anyone already have a VCL for this controller which I can rewrite (not knowing how at the moment)

Now I know, why this controller was so cheap at eBay

PS: Seems to be impossible to get a copy of the WinVCL-Tool. Is there any other way to clone a controller? I have another 1243 which is working very well, and I can access all necessary parameters on this one. So cloning this one would solve my problems....but I don't have any idea how to clone.......

Hi guys...I've been reading and posting in the ' Re: $25 Windows 10 x64 OEM mode 1314 and DIY Cable' thread; but wish to run by a larger audience my step by step process that I have come to understand for being able to program a Chinese Curtis Controller 1205 clone using a DIY cable and software. Sorry for any duplication in my post here as well as over in that thread as well; I just feel it important to bring this to a larger audience as well.

If you would please review the steps I have created below and let me know your thoughts I would be grateful:

- Firstly, may I use either the 1314-4401 OR the 1314-4402 software with the FTDI cable? If so, do I only need to invert Rx and TXT signals with the earlier version 1314-4401 or with both versions of software?

- It is my understanding that after making a FTDI chip usb to 5v TTL UART serial cable; that I need to follow these steps below. I have not yet started the process but wish to get it right the first time:

1) Make FTDI cable as prescribed.

2) Install Curtis software (ie. 1314-4401 Version 3.12 build 33 Update Patch 2 - EXCEPT I can only find build 35 - Patch 2 or 4 - hopefully this is okay?)

3) Reprogram FTDI chip as prescribed by changing device descriptor values, Invert RS232 Signals, latency values etc. Check the boxes for Invert TXD and Invert RXD. Program FTDI using USB 1309 drivers. (Seems like I have to get these drivers by installing the newer 4402 software right?) If the drivers didn't install, manually install them and point Windows to "C:\Program Files (x86)\Curtis Instruments\1314-4402 PC Programming Station\1309 USB Driver"

4) Once FTDI cable is connected to controller, run the 4401 or 4402 software (WHICH ONE?). Then bring up Regedit. Go into HKEY CURRENT USER/Software/Curtis Instruments/1314 CV4/Settings

Then:
**Under Name, look for the entry IAL and right click on the name IAL, select Modify Binary Data - For the line 0000, you want to input the values 76 00 31 00 EC 00 44 00 - For the line 0008, it remains 00 00 00

Then:
**Do the same above for SAL.

Question? - - If I install the Curtis 1314-4401 or 4402 software before-hand; I do not see the registry values for SAL v1žD at all. Are these registry fields created when I first plug in the FTDI cable alone or does the cable also need to be plugged into the controller as well? OR am I completely incorrect about such? OR Do I have to create the actual registry entries SAL & v1žD manually? If I do, what exactly do I need to enter manually as far as the exact registry entries please?

Exactly, Curtis keeps Win-VCL under tight wraps. You would need Win-VCL to replace the OS and to compile a new VCL into that new OS.

The OS supports the controller model, the VCL controls how that controller can be used in a specific application, and what adjustability that you have over that usage.

The VCL limits what you can do with it. Advanced parameters cannot be cloned, only parameters that match the Hardware version, OS version/revision, and Supervisor version/revision.

First off, 1314-4401 was not designed for the USB cable. That alone should render it off-limits for reliability of setup, but it also does not support the newer controllers with Enhanced Serial Mode.

When you set up the 1314-4402 software, it will not create the IAL and SAL registry entries without having a real Curtis 1309 USB to Serial interface. With the interface connected, it will create the IAL (Interface Access Level) entry, and when you connect it to a controller it will create the SAL (Software Access Level) entry. When not using a real Curtis interface, those registry entries will have to be created. All of this information being reposted in other locations increases the danger to those of us that want to reprogram our Curtis controllers. By spreading this information, it has forced Curtis to respond by locking down the new controllers so that this programming trick no longer works with the new controllers now being manufactured by Curtis.

I have no problem with the new controllers, but I will not give Curtis more reason to lock down controllers even further.

All newer Curtis controllers use Enhanced Serial Mode, which also uses a 3.3V FTDI cable instead of the 5V cable.

BTW, I'm the one with over 15 years of Curtis controller and programmer experience. So, good luck getting the answers you seek from others...

I wasn't dismissing you, but honestly just want to know the answers that I am seeking. I'm interested in using the homebrew FTDI USB cable along with the older 4401 version; and I quite simply wanted to know once the USB is programmed, what if any registry changes would be needed. That was it...I don't have a view about Curtis nor do I care to honestly.
