Glad this thread got resurrected... Has anyone been successful getting higher top speed with the programmer? So far, everyone has been trying to hack the software/cable just to get into the controller. What kind of results can we get with the OEM programmer?

Im assuming your talking about the handheld unit from curtis.. Whatever that handheld unit does, this software does plus much much more. Its the OEM software we are using to attempt to reprogram the controllers.

You can change regen strength, motor peak rpm, and much more

What improvements can be made with the OEM programmer? Sounds like top speed is out of the question. Ramp times, regen curves, etc?.. I am really interested in reprogramming my 1268 controller. I read somewhere the regen rates were too harsh and caused instability with 4 passengers. This sounds like something that should be fixable with the handheld. Just wondering...
I wish i could give more details, but my controller that im testing on isnt really co-operating with me much but actualy right now im making a new cable, and gonna take a quick spin outside with the old laptop and to see what happens.

As far as tuneability goes, if you set yourself in OEM mode in the software, you should beable to change all parameters, but you must be carefull, because you can really mess up alot of the settings. Do you have the software installed yet? if you read the manual, i believe it gives some details about the parameters you can change. But you cant see any parameters untill you have the software talking to the controllers. thats why i havent been able to give too much detail on the different things you can change.

I was able to reprogram my 1268 controller for torque increase. I built my cable exactly how the directions described to include the revisions Mr Bill gave. I also used a USB-Serial adapter. Make sure your Com Port settings are correct for the USB. I used COMM 4 and changed the settings in the programming software to read COMM 4. Thanks to all for the help.

Awesome.... here is a link to the controller manual. It might be a combination of parameters. I will have to play around with it to be sure.

Sounds like he might have adjusted RPM to SPEED parameter. If the cart is speed limited by the RPMs, increasing the RPM to SPEED ratio should trick the controller into more RPMs for a given speed.

RPM TO SPEED
The rpm to speed parameter is a conversion factor used to generate a vehicle
speed estimate from the speed sensor input (motor RPM signal). Use these
equations to calculate the value to enter for RPM TO SPEED:
For English units (mph): tire diameter (inches) × 63 gear ratio
For metric units (km/h): tire diameter (cm) × 40 gear ratio

He might have modified the number of TACHO POLES. Doubing this paramater would effectively trick the CPU into thinking the motor is only spinning 1/2 as fast.

TACHO POLES
The tachometer poles parameter configures the speed sensor, and should be
set to the number of magnetic poles in the speed sensor magnet. TACHO POLES is
adjustable from 4 to 20; see speed sensor description (page 14) for information
about sensor types.

Hi, I stumbled across this site while looking for a way to make a permanently installed netbook to monitor my Curtis 1244 controller in my VW bus. You have helped a lot. Just FYI, the controller side connector is a 4 pin Molex Mini-fit jr., you can get them everywhere. Interestingly, some PC power Supplies have both the 24 pin and 4 pin Molex connectors I needed. Happy Hacking, JG

Thats good to hear when i first began looking into doing this, i found alot of posts on the EV sites looking to program curtis stuff, but no one had been sucessful without the software.

If you dont mind, im sure most of us would love to see your VW bus setup!

Here we go. You can see the Curtis 1244 in one of the pictures. I run at 84V, this thing can go 65 on the freeway, but it pretty much stops on a steep hill...I will send a picture of the netbook as soon as I get it done.

Hi,
I'm another one of these guys waiting to see if the cart is going to arrive.
From what I saw about the 1268 controller, and BGW,
I am surprised there's not more info on reprogramming.
Seems like the obvious first step.
I saw a handheld on ebay for $400 so I guessed it won't do what needs to be done.
Once this all gets figured out,
would there be any interest in a lend/lease scheme for the programming setup
or perhaps a controller exchange or reconfig service?
