Welcome earl, what is the pack voltage? With the key on do you hear the solenoid click when you press the gas?

This is perilously close to maybe being a controller cart. Likely resistor but "approx" don't really cut it. Mfg number? Knowing which speed control system will enhance scottyb's ability to help diagnose your issues.

If in 87 range, tag s/b under passenger glove box. If not there or if no "evidence" (holes) that is was there, then pull up seat and look under driver's butt in the wheel well area.

Pics of battery compartment will identify your system as well.

Is traction motor parallel to or perpendicular to axle?

It is parallel to the axel. The make is golf and country by western body on an ezgo frame 1989. Found a number under seat on the frame 20063449. Replaced the microswitch which is activated by the accelator pedal. The other one did not work. I still get power all the way back to the motor key on or key off. Voltage light shows very bright on left side of celenoid and dimmer light on rt. side. Thank you

Sounds like you have an older Model 200 Western. It should have been built on an EZGO chassis with EZGO running gear.
I have a Western cart and back in 87 it may have been available in 3 different voltages 36, 42 and 48, which one do you have?
Does it have resistor coils or a controller?
It's a series cart and they were wired the same as EZGO carts with oddball wiring for the lights and 42v stuff.
Check these diagrams:
http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/elect...g-manuals.html

My cart is a 1998 model 400, 42volt, runs on EZGO running gear/chassis and uses a 36vHS series motor, 8:1 gears, 1205 Curtis controller, runs 21 mph with clubs and the windshield up.

I have a 36 volt and it has resistor coils. Thank you for the diagrams they were helpful. I jury rigged the electric wires on different connectors and got it to actually move. However, I have been unable to duplicate that movment.Thank you--

I want to thank everyone for their help. After finally finding and replacing two microswitches we are up and running and have been since July 4/ I sure know a lot more about the mechanics of the cart than I did before. This forum was so helpful to me.
