Batt gel to flood question
Hi, new to the forum and electric carts. I just bought a 2005 Ruff & Tuff 2 wheel drive for hunting use. The original 6 x 8v gel batteries are still in the vehicle and naturally on their last legs. I can get enough use out of them for this hunting season but want to replace them soon. I think I will just go with wet cell unless I am convinced otherwise.
My questions are, can I still use the charger that I have for the gel batteries if I convert and if not what can I expect to pay for a charger? Battery - charger recommendations? Thanks for your help. Ray |

Re: Batt gel to flood question
Garry, thanks for the response. Keeping the batteries maintained will be a priority for me. Reading through the many posts on this forum I am convinced to go ahead and get Trojan batteries and keep them in top shape. Hope to get many years enjoyment from them.

Gell batteries are expensive. If you only got 5 years from them, then I would suggest that you replace them with Trojan T-875's. Properly maintained, the Trojans will last at least 6 years...

Re: Batt gel to flood question
Gel batteries just aren't worth the extra cost. While maintenance free, you don't get the same power flow and the lifespan that most would like. If drawn to low often, they don't handle the abuse so well either. Next step might be a set of AGM's. They seem to provide more power than the GEL's and are still maintenance free. Cost is still out of my personal reach though.
I'd have to say, I do like the Trojan flooded batteries. I'm old school, and I like the ability to maintain my own batteries, and they fit my budget. If taken care of, they provide the best power, and will last quite a while. Depending on chargers, some are indeed programmed differently though for Flooded/AGM/GEL batteries, as the charging characteristics vary between them. Just don't forget to check your charger. |

VERY good point on checking if your charger will work with flooded batteries! I didn't think of that. You may be forced into getting a different charger?

Mike, could you change your picture? The cart and trailer are great, but with a foot of snow up here, that background just doesn't work for me.

Re: Batt gel to flood question
25 degrees here this mornng - I WISH we had some snow to go with it. That's the problem with Texas - it gets cold on occassion without any of the "fun" benefits

Re: Batt gel to flood question
I like the us Battery over Trojan for the cost per battery ... compare the two and they are about the same in amp hours t875 to us8vgc it's like cars ,carts ect... you just have to look at them and get what suits you best...
