aluminum wheel install help

I know it is basic stuff...but I know there are some that have done it hundreds of times to my one.

1st question, what do you torque your lug nuts at ?

2nd question : I am sure some of you have ran into this so I will ask if I am just plain stupid or if there is something I am missing or wrong caps.

I started putting my wheels on and noticed the center caps loose(will rattle) as I was putting the lug nuts on by hand. I thought they would be ok once I got my nuts/wheel tight....not the case. So I look at the back of a wheel and notice the "step" around each stud hole. (pic #1) So I put the center cap through the wheel and the flange is no where close to taking up the difference in the step in the wheel for when the wheel gets flush to the hub/drum. (pic #2)

Sooooo, was there suppose to be something to make the difference up that I don't have ? Wrong center caps ?

Right now I am wondering if I should go to Home Depot and find some o'rings to fit around my center cap and slide it to the flange to make up the gap difference of the step, then install the wheel so that the o'ring will "squish" as I tighten/torque the nuts and will cause a tight rattle free fit. Maybe there is a fix you guys do that is even easier and something I have in my garage that I didn't even think of ??

It really sucks to get new wheels/tires and it freaking have to sit on jack stands....thanks for any experienced help

Torque the lugs the same as you would a car, 90 ft lbs. As for the rattling center caps, you may be able to bend the flanges slightly in a few spots around each edge, depending on how much clearance you need to absorb. Could also build up the dust caps on the hubs with a few layers of duct tape till the contact the center caps.

Thanks, I figured it would be the same torque since it was the same size studs but wanted to make sure. The pics are hard to see but the space I am trying to fill is actually a lot (battery in caliper dead) and I hated to go bending on new caps.

I thought of tape but also hated to feel like I was half-azzing like that. Since YOU said that then I may go with it. MY wonderful-loving wife just took one of my caps with two o'rings I had (too small of diameter but two different thicknesses that will work as a guide) and a note explaining what I need to Home Depot while our daughter is at basketball practice to see if they have anything. I will see if that works out and if not.....I have all kinds of duct tape

On another note....I didn't tell her I ordered the wheels and tires (she wouldn't care anyway) and I figured it was "Merry Christmas to ME". She opened the garage door when she got home and our dog ran into the garage and straight to the new wheels/tires on the golf cart on jack stands with the old wheels/tires stacked on the floor next to it. He was sniffing the new tires ON THE CART and she said "Tanner is going to pee on the tire (kidding) and never noticed the new ones on the cart or the old ones right next to it lol. She took a new center cap to Home Depot also for the o'rings and STILL didn't know or ask anything.......I LOVE MY WIFE
