Newbie question: favorite suppliers?
Hi all,
Newbie to the forum, and the cart world. I've never swung a club in my life. :) I have a camper on a lake lot, and am tired of walking everywhere. Being a cheap ba$7ard, I am always trying to find the fixer-upper. Found 2 Cushman carts in poor condition that I have not yet retrieved. Both are 36v, both steering-wheel (rather than tiller), one is (I believe) a GC400 (4 wheel, 3 v-belt drive iirc), and the other is (again, I believe) a GC300 (three-wheel, direct drive, really cool chrome (brushed aluminum? ss?) gated F-N-R shifter). Getting them for $75 each, the 3 wheeler first, and the 4 wheeler later. Neither motor is locked up (I can turn them by hand). That stuff ^^^ was copied from my intro post, but it seemed to be a valid starting point here too. So, my actual question concerns parts. Do you guys have any particular suppliers that are your favorites? After reading through the forum for a few hours now, I think it would make sense to start at 48v right away, which means at a minimum batteries (of which there currently are none) and a 48v solenoid, right? At my "real job", I work for a phone company, so I am very comfortable wiring and working with DC, and have access to bulk cabling, connectors, and crimpers, so the actual cabling and wiring will be fairly simple. Thanks for any advice or warnings in advance! :) |

Re: Newbie question: favorite suppliers?
Welcome to BGW. Your old cushman carts are likely resistor coil speed control vehicles. If I am correct about this (they have not been upgraded) then you can not increase the voltage in them with out them having a meltdown someplace.
Cheap has it's limits. Just fix them up and run what you got ... adding more voltage without a complete system upgrade to solid state speed control will make them unreliable in the long run. |

See? Now, this is why I absolutely LOVE forums like this! There are so many knowledgable people willing to offer advice and help those who need it.
Thanks so much for the info, scottyb. I really appreciate it. I will post some pics of these things once I pick them up, and start doing some research on them. Have a great 4th! |

Re: Newbie question: favorite suppliers?
So, any entries in the "best supplier" contest?
. . . . OK, so there's really not a contest... I am just phishing for those vendors that you guys have found to be reliable and well priced. Like any other hobby, I am sure there are those out there trying to prey on the newbies, and I'd prefer not to be their dinner. :) TIA! |

Re: Newbie question: favorite suppliers?
Ok, I have been looking through the Site Sponsors section for a couple of hours now, and I'm starting to get frustrated. All I see are parts for EZ-GO, Yamaha, and CC, nothing specifically universal...
Specifically, I have been looking for solenoids, controllers, and pots (trying to figure out the costs of upgrading from resister coils to electronic). Are there "universal" parts available, or do I just choose one of the three majors, and use their parts? If so, which of the three is better for a one-off upgrade like this? Scottyb, I saw your pics on another thread (http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/elect...onversion.html) showing the reason for not using 48v on resistor coils. That looked really severe and dangerous! Hope no one was burned! Thanks, you guys! |

Scottyb is the only site sponsor I have used so far. I bought a new controller, wires, solenoid, HD F/R cam, digital battery monitor. All top notch stuff with great directions.

Re: Newbie question: favorite suppliers?
New news: it lives! I wired some used 12v automotive starter batteries in that I had laying around the shop, and am able to drive the Cushman! I wanted to make sure the system was viable before going any further. Guess it's worth it now!
Woo hoo! |

Re: Newbie question: favorite suppliers?
I have had 2 guys buy the CC solid state conversion kits and install them in something else; one a TD burden carrier and the other some model of Cushman. Both guys had to do some fab work to get their throttle to connect to my set up but, both were real happy with the results. One stayed 36v and the other went with 48v...
