Default New controller, motor doesn't run

I'm just a teenager building an electric go kart. I bought a brand new alltrax NPX 300 amp controller 48v. The back end of the kart is from an old Harley Davidson cart with 36v series motor.
My question is why doesnt my motor turn when i accelerate. I am using a 5k pot from radioshack for now. I wired everthing as shown in my diagram and I get a solid green light indicating "ready to run" but when pot is turned the light doesnt show open throttle and motor doesnt engage.
As you can see I am using the steering box from a geo metro, it gives really smooth steering.
Thanks ahead of time

I always wanted to play around with an electric cart ....
The NPX is a non programmable controller - are you sure it is set up for a 0-5k pot? And have you checked your pot to make sure you are getting the proper range?

yes, the controller is 0-5k. the green led on controller flashes once at startup signaling you have 0-5k throotle, im not very good with electronics but i tried testing the pot and it did read 0-5. I keep trying the throttle and i get no amber light that shows open throttle

Try the center and the other outside terminal of your pot. Looks like it should work by your diagram.

I've tried that already and it didn't seem to make any difference, still no amber light.
I am completely clue less. I did order the controller for 0-5k throttle, and when it starts up the led blinks once showing that it is programmed for 0-5k.
Any more ideas guys?
