Default Yamaha Drive Battery Charger operation

Hello:
I leave my 2007 Drive golf cart stored in a non heated shed during the winter months. I keep it plugged in. I read somewhere that the charger will keep the batteries up (stop them from freezing) by periodically checking the voltage. But I also heard that if the power to the charger was interrupted, the cord needed to be unplugged and then plugged back in. Is this information correct? Also does having the brake on, cause a slow drain on the batteries.
Last winter my batteries froze for the first time in several years and I am trying to discover why.

Yes, the charger will turn it self on and off as needed. Yes, if ac power is interupted, you must unplug the dc cord and plug it back in to resart the charging cycle. No, I don't see how the brake would draw voltage (unless you have brake lights that don't turn off). I would recommend putting the "run/tow" switch into tow.

I was under the impression once the batteries where fully charged and the charger shut off, it would not turn itself back on. But it sounds like I was wrong there.

I understood if the power was interrupted during charging, you'd have to unplug and plug back in to get the charger to finish the charge. But I thought once off it stayed off and did not tend the batteries.

I thought the same thing. I thought the charger was not a maintainer. Once it was fully charged that was it. I purchased a 48 volt battery tender to maintain the batteries.
Would I need to disconnect the main wire from the pack for this?
I also am keeping my cart in an unheated shed for the nice cold Wisconsin winter.

The model number on mine is JW9-82107-01. It says on the label "multistage charger/maintainer".

Thanks for all the input guys.
My Yamaha Drive in a 2007 model. It came with the smaller (so called) high tech charger. My friend that bought the same model and year at the very same time (even same load) came with the large charger that he believes doesn't monitor the battery charge levels. I have seen on the internet (must be true- lol) that there were 3 different chargers available in 2007.
I have never been around when the charger "kicks in" to maintain the batteries, but I was told by the dealer it would, but the dealer also told my friend at a different time, that the larger charger was a better one.
So who knows? Will be interesting to know what is the real truth.

Some factory chargers have a 14 day timer inside, others wait till the battery voltage drops below 70% SOC, and others do nothing at all unless unplugged and plugged back in.

And I assume there is no way of knowing which of these a person has.

I have an 08 drive, and when I bought it I was told once the charger shut off you had to unplug it to get it to go back on.

In my case it really won't make much difference because I use my cart in the cold weather months, so it's getting charged and discharged the same as in the summer.

I have never seen a comprehensive list of the factory chargers that DO perform some sort of maintenance charge cycle.

The best chargers are aftermarket replacements and have continuous maintenance charge mode like the DPI charger ScottyB sells or the compact on-board QC charger I like to use.
