Exclamation Severely over charged batteries on a 2004 G22

So about 3 weeks ago I set out to add a LED strip light, voltage regulator and battery charge indicator on my 04' G22. Unfortunately I didn't finish the project and I left my cart jacked up (tilted to the side) with my lawn mower "Jungle Jack". It remained this way for 3 weeks. I did check to make sure the battery plates were not exposed, and no fluid leaked out. I felt confident it would be ok, it was on about a 15 degree tilt.
Well I finished the project today and checked the charge. I thought there was something wrong with my multimeter. Each battery was reading 12.5 to 12.7 volts and around 74-75 volts in series. The out put of the new voltage regulator confirmed the 50% increase, it was supposed to be putting out 12v but its putting out 18v. The cart was not charged at all during the time it was tilted to the side.
I am really curious what cause this, and what I should do moving forward. I dont feel as though it is safe to run the cart at 75v. So until I figure out what to do, I am leaving it sit.

if you have another meter try it to make sure that one isn't lying to you.

Yep, weak batteries in your meter will cause your meter to tell lies.

Thanks for the advice. I cross checked the meter on my truck battery and it also read 19.4v as opposed to 12.x It was the meter all along ... simple answer that I should have been able to figure out. Thanks again.

Same thing happened to me once. Being an old guy I have learned that "simple answers" are often the hardest to figure out

Most cheap digital voltmeters start reading very high when their battery gets weak. Not good! Replace the batteries often and check them by reading a known voltage source.

Not just the cheapies, i have a BluePoint one from the early 90s that does it too, i dont consider a Snap-On product to be a cheap one. I think they pretty much all do that when the batts are gone.
