Yamaha and DPI Charger question.
I am a first time poster so please bear with me. I recently bought a house that came with a 2006 Yamaha Electric golf cart with 6 batteries. It also has a DPI charger. The charger has 5 or so led lights on the front. The house was vacant for 2 years before I bought it and the golf cart had been sitting that long without use. I am guessing the batteries are bad? When I plug in the charger nothing happens on the charger. No lights or anything light up. Not even the red "power" light. It doesn't matter if it is plugged into the cart or not. I took the cover off of the charger and the 2 fuses on the circuit board are good. There is no other reset buttons on the outside of the charger anywhere. There is power going into the little magnetic swith on the back inside cover of the charger but no power coming out of that switch. Question?-Do the batteries have to have a partial charge to kick the charger on? Should the power light on the charger be lit whenever the charger is plugged in?
Thanks for the help! Marty in Arkansas. |

Re: Yamaha and DPI Charger question.
Welcome to BGW The "lights" react off of "DC". You'll need at least 44 volts in the battery set for the charger to sence it is plugged into something. You could try force charging them, but after 2 years....I wouldn't count on it.

Re: Yamaha and DPI Charger question.
I have checked the water and it is all good. I think I would like to try to force charge them. What do I have to lose? How do I do this?
Thanks for the help !!! |

Re: Yamaha and DPI Charger question.
Smallblock-
Could I just unhook the battery leads and isolate 2 batteries at a time and charge them with my 12 volt trickle charger by hooking the negative to the first battery negative post and the positive to the second battery positive post? I think this will work but you tell me if I am crazy or not. I don't want to blow my house up trying to save $600 dollars but don't want to spend the $600 if I don't have too. I would rather spend that $600 on a new motorguide trolling motor for my wifes birthday. |

Re: Yamaha and DPI Charger question.
What you suggest will work. Just keep an eye out for problems. If you have a DVM that will help in taking readings. Good luck

Hecky50- Thanks for the help. I think I will try this and see what happens. Will report back with results.
By the way- is a DVM a Digital Volt Meter? just guessing. I do have one of those. Right now it is probably at zero volts as the lights horn or radio will do nothing. won't even light up the radio dial. |

Re: Yamaha and DPI Charger question.
Yes, that will work, but I do suggest putting the run/tow switch into tow.

Re: Yamaha and DPI Charger question.
Don't even need to disconnect batteries, just connect between 2 for a 12v load on the charger. You could also jumper the relay in the charger to force the charger on. You may be able to get enough life in them to test the cart and maybe even cruise around a bit but you will need to replace them to get the performance the cart is made to provide.

Re: Yamaha and DPI Charger question.
I have charged 2 batteries at a time with a 12v charger. The batteries are reading like 13.5 volts +/-for each set. However, when I hook all 6 back up and plug in the big DPI charger, all 5 lights on the front of the DPI charger just blink all at the same time about once per second continuosly.
Also, I can not get anyhting to come on on the cart. no lights, horn, radio or anything. I do know this cart has had a "Personal Transport Vehicle" kit put on it. It has turn signals, horn, lights and etc... and it had an owners manual about the kit under the seat. I need help in understanding what is going on with this crazy thang. Thanks |
