Default how wide is too wide for wheel spacers?

My only experience with wheel spacers has been to compensate for offset/backspacing issues when putting aftermarket wheels on cars.

I'd like to widen the track width of a cart that I use exclusively on paved roads.

Sorry for the really low quality photo. As you can (hopefully) see the cart has a heavy metal enclosure so the center of gravity is higher than normal, and the wheel/tires on the cart are 12" trailer tires so the outer edge of the tire is tucked under the cart.

I think adding wheel spacers will decrease the possibility of a roll over if some jackass decides to go too fast into a decreasing radius, reverse banked turn.

My question is how wide can I go before I cause problems? And, what would most likely fail? The lug studs? The wheel bearings? The axle?

I was thinking about 2" spacers on the front (4" total), and 2.5" spacers on the rear (5" total).

Thoughts?

Lots of guys are running on 2" spacers with off-set wheels. Expect a little more wear of the bearings. Would that stop me from putting the spacers on? No. What is the max. for spacers? I don't know. Hope this helps.

A lot depends on weight. My buddy has 2 inch spacers on the rear with 25 inch tires and there can be a "load" on there at times but they have snapped 2 axles so far

I have 3" spacers on rear and 2" spacers on front with 24" tires. I run it just about as hard as you can. Been 5+years, no issues. However, I do believe the bearings do take on extra stress.
