Using a voltage reducer to charge added 12v accessory battery.?.?.?
So I'm having a stereo system added to my cart. The audio shop was originally going to wire everything to my 30amp Madjax reducer. We added a few more components at the last minute and he recommended adding an accessory battery. So he is currently doing the install.
He is now going to use the reducer to charge the accessory battery off of the main battery system. My question is has anyone used a reducer in this way and does anyone see any issue with doing so? We walked through the install a few times and it makes sense in my head. I was wanting to keep from having to use an additional charger. P.S. GO ROYALS!!!! |

Won't work unless you find a charger that runs off of 12V. The reducer's output is not going to charge your 12V battery by it's self.

So.... Here is the response from Madjax.
Thank you for looking to Madjax for your accessory needs. The MJ1230C will not work in this application because the 1230 is key switch operated. If you leave the converter on all the time it will burn up it up. It is not designed to stay on all the time. That being said, no the converter does not have a auto shut off. It could possibly be set up to push voltage to the 12 volt battery but you would have to manually turn it off after 2-3 hours. Thanks, Benjie Donovan | Madjax Inc. So I guess I can use it in conjunction with a battery tender?.?. I'm going to try it and find out. What's the worse that could happen right. LOL |

Can you use the reducer to power an inverter that would power a battery charger??

I would not run a standard battery charger off of a 12V to 120V inverter!!!!!

I have done it with the surepower convertor, it worked fine. I later read that it is not suggested.

So far so good. I ran the cart for a couple hours tonight pushing 2 amps and 6 speakers on top of the led lights. The auxiliary battery never seemed to lose any power. The reducer is hooked up to a switch so I can turn it on and off. We set it up on the same switch that turns the audio system on so it would feed the auxiliary battery while in use.
I guess that I could leave the switch on and radio off to charge the auxiliary battery while charging my cart. I'm going to run it this way for awhile and see what happens. |
