Default G29 Electric Questions

Hi All! First time posting, but I have been reading and searching a ton over the last few years.

Old Cart:

New Cart:

Long story short, I had a 2010 G29 with four 12v (T-1275's) that I owned in half with my little brother. His wife wanted the cart to themselves, so he bought me out of my half. Recently, I picked up a 2012 G29 with six 8v (T-875's). The new cart gets about half the range as my old cart... maybe even a quarter.

Batteries test good on the multi-meter, but I have not tested with a hydrometer. Either way, I picked up 6 new Ranger 160's today and will be installing them this evening. Batteries will be good from here on out and now, I will know the history of them.

Question #1. The cart came with an "upgraded" motor. The only info I can find is a sticker on the motor that says "Copperhead by A.L.M." I have searched and searched, but cannot find any information on this. Obviously, not a Plum Quick or the like. Anyone heard of A.L.M.?

Question #2. My old cart had the stock motor/controller and I went to the dealer and had the PTV code done. It did a solid 19mph (just like it should) and had stock-like torque and great range. The new cart does a little a mile or two more on the top end, but barely makes it up the driveway and has horrible range. Will new batteries help with torque (obviously range will be increased) or should I just go back to a stock motor and have the controller reprogrammed? I guess I am concerned about the "upgraded" motor, as I am unsure how badly it can be screwed up by "upgrading".

Question #2A. Would it help anything to have the controller reprogrammed with the PTV in addition to the "upgraded" motor? I am not certain, but it does not appear the PTV has ever been done to my cart. Maybe I can call the dealer and ask them to run the controller serial to see if my assumptions are correct.

Question #3. My old cart had a DPI charger. It was a big old heavy thing. The new cart came with the OEM Yamaha charger. Its pretty small in comparison and has an internal fan. Are these good chargers? Based on the specs I've found, the output seems to be the same on both chargers, but I can't find any info/reviews on the OEM Yamaha charger. I want to make sure that I have an acceptable charger if I am spending all this $$$$$$ on new batteries.

My charger:

The DPI is better IMO. Yamaha also offeres a DPI option from the assembly line (if you "check that box" and pay extra). We did that until they decided to remove that option on 8x 6v equipped carts. If the tach sensor is connected (on end of motor), adding ptv code should get some speed, but no added torque.

Your 6 x 8V should give you better range than the 4 x 12v so your batteries are probably junk. See how it is with the new ones before you do anything else. I have the OEM Yamaha charger and it has not given me any trouble in the four years I have had it. Seems like a good unit to me. It relies on the fan for cooling so if it fails, that would be a bad thing.

Thanks guys. Hopefully I can get the batteries in tonight and give them a good charge overnight so tomorrow night I can take it for a cruise and see if anything has changed.

Try to follow the recommended break in on your new batteries. Short runs between charges.

New batteries have been great. I've been charging it after every use and have yet to get beyond one "tick" on the battery meter.

Unfortunately, the cart still acts weird when going from a stop to speed. It's almost like there is a delay in acceleration. I can pretty much stop at a stop sign, press the pedal all the way down and wait a "ONE, ONE THOUSAND" until the cart starts to move. I am not looking for neck breaking torque. I'd just like a responsive pedal. Is this something that can be reprogrammed?

You can take it to a dealer and have the PTV code done like you did to your other one.

Well, after a month with the new batteries, they are outstanding. Just this last Sunday, we took the cart for a legitimate 17.5 mile drive and took the charge down to about 50% at 48.3v. A little low, I know, but we had to make it home. :)

I am still fighting this atrocious "Upgraded" motor. With my wife and I on the cart, we can't make it up our driveway. In reverse, the cart goes up without an issue. In forward, I need a running start.

So here is my dilemma...

Do I buy a new stock motor and get the PTV code put into the controller (Cost will be about $700)?

or

Should I keep this "upgraded" motor and buy the AllTrax 500amp controller and new battery cables (this will cost around $700)?

I have this gut feeling I should just go back to stock, but what say you?

More for myself, but I found the ALM Copperhead Motor in this thread: http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/extre...olt-motor.html

Advance Lift Motors is local and I will be calling them to see what they can do/undo for me.
