Default Motor interchange

Hoping some one can help me here. I have a 36V 1996 G14E. It has noise coming from the rear end which I believe to be motor bearings. I found a whole rear end out of a 1995 G14E that I tested and it runs smoothly. The motors look the same, however the '95 motor reads 2450 RPM and the motor in my '96 reads 3300RPM. Can I directly swap these out or would they need a different controller?

If they both are on identical looking axles, should be fine. Just be sure the replacement motor does not have a tach sensor on the end facing away from the axle (that would indicate a incompatible "sepex" motor). If you have the older "Yamaha built axle" (indicated by no black steel pan on bottom of axle), there is a large pool of compatible motors including Yamaha G1, G2, G3, G5, G8, G9, & All Clubcar "series style" motors (Clubcar 48v series motors will be bad on 36v, but a cheap option for use in a 48v upgrade).

What does the difference in the RPM's mean? Will the cart run slower? The '95 motor and rear end I found still has the controller attached and it appears to be the same controller as on my '96(not sure if the controller is good). While it would be easier to just change the motor, would I be better served in changing out the whole rear end?

Just change the motor, the motor with lower rpm rating might be slower, but it wont hurt the controller. In a "series" system like yours, the controller is not that "tightly tuned" to the motor like a "sepex" system. You just cant expect to install a HD offroad torque motor, nor a "big top speed" motor. Motors that are "close enough" to your original motor are fine in a "series" system like you have. Dont make unreasonable goals for the stock equipment (its not a rock crawler with a stock motor or controller, its also not gonna do 25 mph with 4 people on it with stock motor or controller).

Changed the motor out last night, rear end noise I was getting is still there, must be in the differential. Going to change the fluid next as it is a dark gray slime. What fluid is used? I've done an EZGO in the past and it used SAE 30, but the stuff I'm draining out looks like gear oil.

Thanks Cgtech! I also noticed in another thread you advised someone to use some Lucas Oil in the differential. Does that apply here also and what percentage do I use?

I like to run up to (but no more than) 50% Lucas Oil Stabilizer on axles that are noisey, or are prone to noise (club cars, cars with high speed gears). Yamaha built axles are Not known to be extra noisey. Its up to you, i only do it to noisey axles. I suggest Not running 100% Lucas O. S. In anything, it gets whipped up like whipped honey.

Any idea what the torque specs might be on the differential housing cover?
