2010 ydre high speed gear change
Hi all, newbie here. I have a 2010 ydre. I bought a rebuilt "high speed" motor and am now getting 21mph with everything else stock. Cart does not have ptv code. I'm hoping to get 5+ more mph, and am thinking 8:1 gears might be the ticket. Cart is only used on flat asphalt so a loss of torque isn't a huge concern. Local shops really don't want to touch my gearing and I can't find much info as far as what seals/bearings should be replaced or instructions in general. Is a new controller a must? I've read re-wound motors will not work with upgraded controllers. Thoughts?

As long as your flat driving the 8:1 gears should do what you need. Bearings should be fine.

Re: 2010 ydre high speed gear change
get the ptv speed code from a yamaha dealer to unlock your controller (must be entered by the dealer), it will work better for you. no loss of torque, easier on the controller, big speed increase, lower cost.

Re: 2010 ydre high speed gear change
Thank you cgtech. I've read many posts and you seem to be the ydre jedi. So the ptv code will not be hard on my high speed motor since it was built knowing the cart has no ptv code? Being from bakersfield, california i've had zero luck finding a dealer or anyone who can install the code. I had no idea the code could still improve my cart even with the new motor. Thank you!
Any recommendations as to how i can get the code locally? |

must be installed by a yamaha dealer. they are the only ones Yamaha motor will sell it to. plus, no one else has the yamaha software for pda/pc to connect to the controller.

Re: 2010 ydre high speed gear change
Although more expensive, can I just throw an alltrax 400 in it to bypass the need for ptv code in effort to gain a few more mph? Thanks, and sorry to keep buggin.

Re: 2010 ydre high speed gear change
that would be the best option of all listed so far. that will get you increased torque, increased speed and increased reliability. i had not pressed that idea yet because $.

I would go with the Alltrax before I would pay Yamaha a dime for their speed upgrade. With the Alltrax, you dial in the speed you want and it will give you more torque than the stock controller.

Re: 2010 ydre high speed gear change
I just got done with the high speed gear upgrade. Unfortunately I thought I purchased 8:1 gears from amazon (listed as 8:1) but when I got the gears and checked the manufacturer's website, they are actually 9:1 gears. Although bummed, I figured that it would put less stress on the cart overall and maintain a little bit of torque.
Since installing, I have not really noticed a change in torque. I was getting a solid 11mph with a flicker to 12 on slight declines....now I cruise at 16 and hit 18-19 on declines. Anyway, I also noticed a huge lack of write up's on the internet and purchased a service manual and just kind of winged it. I had to go to harbor freight and buy a gear puller set (40 bucks). I can say unless you are superman, you need this gear puller. You will also need something to seal the transfer case back together (permatex ultrablack as recommended by my auto mechanic. a 4 dollar tube from autozone did the trick). If you have any questions about changing the gears please let me know. Its not the hardest thing to do, but its time consuming and frustrating at times (I had a lot of rust to deal with). |
