Battery question
We have a 94 G8E. It's 36v and the batteries are a little over 2 years old. The problem I am having is the gauge was going into the red in about 20-30 minutes of on and off driving in a hilly campground. Checked the levels and had to add water to 2 batteries. Charged them up again and the same thing. I tested the volts right away and was 35.7 in series. I tested each battery and the first one off the solenoid was 4.19 colts. The rest were around 6.3. After about 15 minutes the bad battery was up to 6.2 just sitting there. Drove it again and same thing 4.1 volts. This is not one of the batteries I had to add water to. Is this a common problem for 1 battery to crap out then regain its volts on its own. Is there anything else I should look for. I did check the volts while it was charging and the bad battery was about 1 half volt higher then the rest.

Re: Battery question
That battery is bad. Try load testing them and that one is going to fail the test.

That battery is not recharging itself, it's draining voltage from the 3 other batteries in the battery pack.

Re: Battery question
With batteries being more expensive then some replacement engines it would be important to learn the science behind them to make them last longer.
1 - large batteries I've seen in electric cart are the simplest lead acid battery. Old school high amp output - cap on the top - got to add water. 2 these types of batteries will sulfate faster then any other type battery. When the sulfates breaks up from vibration they fall to the bottom and short out the plates and the cell dies. 3 Fast heavy charging will break up the sulfates because of the gassing from the chemical reaction of charging. 4 Charge each battery separately if possible. 5 there are chargers on the market that will break up the sulfates and restore the cells life. I'm old - went to a lot of training classes as a mechanical engineer. All I can say is to learn as much as possible about your batteries and they can last a long time with proper TLC. |
