Default PTV code for YDRE. How does it work?

I was curious how the PTV code works. Will I loose or gain anything...other than going 19mph? I had heard the lower end torque would decrease a little bit. I'd like to upgrade the controller to an Alltrax after speaking with Plowman...but need to save some money for that upgrade (earn more winnings at golf!!!)

The local dealer here does it for $150. Just wondering if it's worth the money for the PTV code!

PTV code won't reduce your torque - just increase your max speed which is now limited by the controller. You are wasting your money though if you are planning on going to an Alltrax controller (Which does not need a PTV code to give you faster speeds) The $150 is a rip-off IMO since all it does is allow the controller to increase the max speed.

a "rip-off"? got any ideas of a cheaper way to get 19mph? if your stock torque is suitable for your needs, and you plan on leaving your cart as it is, the ptv code is the most economical way to get 19mph available. you wont loose any torque.

Sorry but I call charging that kind of $$ to unlock existing capability a rip-off. I know why they do it but I still don't like the concept.

I agree. It is like buying a car and then having to pay extra to make it go over 70 MPH. I assume you could just hook up a laptop and program it. Yamaha should let us download what we need and the instructions to do it.

I wish someone knew how to bypass their governer. Does anyone know anything about how these controllers get programed. I'm a nerd and wouldn't mind tinkering if I could get test controller. I'm sure their firmware isn't super secure, we just need a programmer that knows how to reverse engineer it and find a hole.

One solution is to mess with the motor tachometer magnet to fool the controller.

I did go ahead and get the PTV code entered into my controller. Came to $164.25 after frickin' Arkansas 9.75% sales tax. I am pretty happy with it. Torque is still the same as before, which I was happy with anyway. I typically cruise around 17 on the cart path. Coming down my street (slight decline), I'll hit 20 mph.

IMO, the $164 was worth it. I spoke to Plowman the other day. He said he didn't like the idea of the code...and I respect his opinion. I discussed other options with him. He recommended an Alltrax XCT 300 controller. He also mentioned, that in a few years, that controller would probably burn up the motor. So, I weighed the options and decided to go with the $164 option for now. The controller option is an awesome deal....and when I decide to upgrade (after wife's approval :-)), I'll be calling Don back!

I went the Alltrax route and it did burn up the stock motor. I now have a D&D motor and it runs nice and cool. One solution to paying to unlock the controller would be to build a little board that modifies the speed sensor signal and passes on a reduced version to the controller. That would be a fun little programming project for someone so inclined. Probably would cost about $15 using an Arduino Pro Mini board. That way you could dial the ratio instead of messing with the magnet.
