Sun Classic G3. What to look for?
Hey everyone,
I am new to the carting world, but found an electric Sun Classic G3 that I fell in love with. I plan to make the owner an offer for it, but want to know what to look for or what challenges I may be in for with purchasing such an uncommon/unique cart. What I know so far: The owner is an older retired gentleman that has had it for many years. To the untrained eye it looks to be in great physical condition and well taken care of. The batteries were replaced last year. All lights are in working order. What I dont know and hope the members of this forum can help with: What common issues do these carts have? What are the costs associated with maintaining and/or fixing these if they break down? How hard are parts to come by? (might not have a windshield) Can a novice do the work of upgrading or replacing the motor in the future? What other questions should I ask the owner before handing over the cash? What is a ballpark fair price for this given the detail I have provided? Thank you all in advance!!! |

I have one and I love it. Mine’s all redone with 48v and an Alltrax controller and D&D motor. Parts are impossible to find though- everything has to be made- including the windshield.
The one you’re looking at is probably 36v with a stock resistor speed control. Not sure how much you are looking to pay- mine was cheap because I did everything to it. How about a picture? I’d love to see it. Club Car DS driver’s club #59 |

I searched through the site quite a bit before posting and your G3 project is looking great. What seat did you use for the back? How much modification did you need to do? |

The back seat was a big project. Just did it last week. I used the GTW kit for the ezgo TXT and I can take more pictures if needed.

Adding the backseat is definitely something I would like to do, so I may reach back out once I am ready to tackle that part. |

Re: Sun Classic G3. What to look for?
Yep, the G3 was fairly rare, so many parts are orphaned/"unobtanium". The general idea of the electrical and drivetrain are super similar to G1e, which makes diagnostic work easier if you think about it like a G1e (there are a couple exceptions to this generalization). This does not apply to the lights system at all, since a G1 never had that. I hope you get it as a runner, as all parts that are available are pricey (the G3 specific parts, and the G3/G1 same parts). When shopping for a motor, look for a club car "series type" motor, they bolt right up, but don't expect to hotrod it by simply swapping in a motor. The stock resistor speed control is not gonna be happy with a beefier motor.

Re: Sun Classic G3. What to look for?
**Update**
I made the trip and ended up purchasing this last night. It has a few things to work out, but overall I am super happy with it. A couple things about it that I found out when picking it up. The drivers side roof and rear pillar have been repaired after a tree fell and damaged it. The work was done really well and unless you know it is not noticeable. The previous owner was running 3 standard 12v automotive batteries instead of the typical set up. The headlights are not working. All other lights work as they should though. The high beams came on for a few seconds when playing with the control, so hopefully its a simple fix. Since I am still completely new to this, I have a few questions that I hope you guys can help with. Are there any issues running the batteries the way he has them? Are the lights and other electrical just standard 12v like a car? Would replacing the bulbs with LED's give me a noticeably longer drive time? What are some simple upgrades (electrical or mechanical) I can do to help keep this running for years to come? Thanks in advance! Adam |

Re: Sun Classic G3. What to look for?
You won’t get very long run time with that battery configuration, and they’re probably not deep cycle batteries so they won’t take being discharged.
I’d go for the right configuration. If you are planning on leaving it as a resistor setup, 36v is all you should do. It looks just like mine though. Sweet! Club Car DS driver’s club #59 |
