Default G19 upgrade

I just purchased a '97 G19, 48V, all stock. I am about to buy batteries as they are about 5 1/2 yrs old and pretty weak. I want to lift the cart and possibly stretch it later but first want to increase the power so it will be able to handle the mods to come. Increased speed would be nice but torque is probably more important 'cause we have a lot of hills and I'll have the whole family on the cart. I can't afford it all at once, so what's first? Should I buy a new controller? What size/type? Do I need a new motor or rewind this one or will stock do? Is there anything else I need? This is my first cart so I am learning as I go.
Thanks,
Derek

First off Derek. WELCME TO THE FORUM!

I would do a complete 4 gauge cable upgrade. Then go for an EMP 2 speed motor. With the EMP 2 speed you can have the best of both worlds...SPEED AND TORQUE! The EMP can be bought for less than $150 (last time I looked) plus shiping. Then as the cash comes get the biggest controller you can afford but at least a 400 amp model. An alltrax 400 amp model would be about the smallest.

Thanks. I thought it would be nice to have a switch for speed/torque but didn't know they made it for golf carts. I'll look into it.
