Exhaust tubing for frame
The frame on my golf cart is made from 2 inch steel tubing, has anyone used thick wall exhaust tubing to repair the frame? looks like the same stuff to me.

Re: Exhaust tubing for frame
check your wall thickness as long as it's the same you should be good. Look in your area for steel shops. I know the ones around here will let you go thru the scrap piles and get some end cuts for scrap prices. that's great if you are looking for some 2-3 ft or so pieces for small projects. most time that will be cheaper than buying exhaust tubing or conduit. I know I just bought a 2 1/2" exhaust tube for my RV in a 10' length for 50 bucks. so that may help put it in perspective.
Hope that helps. Good luck! |

Re: Exhaust tubing for frame
Well I went to my local midas here and 2 inch exhaust tubing was not thick enough but they directed me to a metal and fabrication shop, these guys do it all, I will get some diamond plate too.

Re: Exhaust tubing for frame
well, i'm not an expert or anything, but i do know there are differences in metals used for different applications. it would seem that something in use as a frame should be made out of steel that has been hardened in some way. i'd ask some experts, just to be sure. if it were that easy, i'm sure everyone would be doing it

Re: Exhaust tubing for frame
Right on the money Salty...Exhaust tubing, altho may be the same size, is of a lower grade steel. I would NOT reccomend using it for a frame or roll cage at all. If you want a brush guard, it would work but will not with stand the abuse that regular DOM steel will survive. Welding it is another issue that you don't relly want to get started. If one uses exhaust tubing and has it bent in an exhust tubing bending machine it will have crimped bends and they are not for appearence nor strenght. My two cents worth.

Re: Exhaust tubing for frame
I just used 1 7/8 roll cage tubing left over from building the race car. Slide the pipe right inside and weld. I just got a 1989 g2 with the frame completely rusted and had to do this. Ten times stronger now.
