Gas engine conversion

I've got an 83 G1E that the motor is bad and the batteries are 6 years old.

I was thinking about converting it over to gas rather than keeping it electric.
I've also got an old Case riding tractor/mower 10 hp Kohler engine with Hydrostatic drive (fluid drive) that runs good and I don't use anymore. The thing is built like a tank, everything is waaay heavier duty than was ever needed for a mower.
The trans setup has a low speed for pulling power and a high speed range for faster speed.

It shouldn't cost too much since I can fabricate most anything I need myself.

Has anyone ever used a combo like this before in a conversion?

Not that I know of. Whats the Hydrostaic drive/diff look like? How wide is it? Is it belt or shaft driven? What speed can it operate? What do you want to use it for? These would be the questions you will need to awnser for a swap even with your fabbing skills there could be some "headaches". Good luck

Essentially the transmission/rear axle is driven by hydraulic fluid pressure from a a pump driven by the engine. The fluid pushed through one way is forward, the other way is reverse.


The rear axle is a few inches narrower and has manually operated (linkage) disc brakes on it.
It has a 5 on 4.5 bolt pattern like a car so I can either use wheel spacers and use the original 22 x 12 tires and wheels or I can use a deep dish offset wheel with fat rear tires.

In the high speed range it would push the tractor about 12-15 mph roughly.
I used it to pull the dead golf cart around to put it in a different garage and it pulled as if the gold cart wasn't even there so I know it should have plenty of power.

There are a number of members here that own or manage golf courses here that have thought of that idea, especially using some of the larger reel mowers as donors, but I don't recall anyone ever doing it. If your happy with that top speed, go for it! Keep us informed with lots of pics!!

Followed a crop duster high wheel on the road yesterday
and it had hyd motors and the engine was spun way up
all the time. Does the tractor need to be revved all the time?
