It is hard to freeze a charged battery. As charging creats heat... Bulging sides is a sign of overcharging or just plain old and done in batteries. Sounds like you may need new. How old are they and what does the voltmeter say?

Every electric cart owner needs to have a voltmeter. Do not let the batteries set flat for extended times....as that alone can kill them . If you have no tools check the water levels ( distilled water only) and charge. The year of manufacture is stamped into the lead post base. I yr old 07 or 06?
